Need an alternative to World of Warcraft

So yesterday I was on my upteenth run in Scolo tryign to get one piece of armor that never f'in drops...ever. When it didn't drop that time (btw its the valor helm which is "meh" anyways but i dont have time for MC, BWL, AQ, BBQ) I really started to realize that im getting streight sick of this crap, and am looking to put my cash somewhere else.

My main problems with WoW are:

1) Level 60 boredom

2) Barrens Chat (and now the new and improved global LFG chat (take the barrens with you everywhere!!!))

3)Lame & repetitive item grinding.

4)Sweet rewards to people who run in bad-@ss guilds and scraps to everyone else. (yay for tier .5 but comeon it costs like 800gold or more to get the set (associated costs of materials and tips), and MC guilds get better for free)

5)Hobbled PvP

6) No real feeling of conflict or danger.

Blizzard made a good game but I think I have outgrown it so I'm looking for a new fix. I've heard good things about eve online and was considering moving there, but most reviews of that game are circa 2003. The new D&D game looks good too, with what i would hope is a deeper plot and better level design.

you are mising out on so much not getting into a raiding guild.

Since you don't have time for the real end game stuff, i would say go PvP..

but that can take hours upon hours to get anywhere also.

so maybe WoW just isn't for you.

Oblivion ? ? Unless you are looking for a mmorpg.....have you looked at GuildWars ? The expansion just came out and adds an entire continent to explore. The play is good , Graphics are good, and you can go PVP or play along at your own pace....and there is no fee to play on AreaNet.
No FEE!!!!!!

I'm sort of in the same position - not having time for the end-game raids that take 4+ hours at a time. After I got to 60, I just tasked myself to get the best equipment possible, a step at a time (tier 0 pieces / upgrade chain quests --> tier 0.5 pieces / instance runs for more tier 0 pieces / then more upgrade chain quests / farming for gold to support this process). You basically just think of a goal and work toward it. But you do have to come to the realization that there is a ceiling if you're not going to do end-game raids.

I was in the same spot.

Quit WoW for a while. Your character will be there when you come back. Go check out Oblivion for a while.

I plan on returning when the WoW expansion arrives.

I'm not knocking WoW. Content can't be infinite of course. I just hit the end and in order to keep me playing they had me start grinding. Not fun. I'll be back when there is more content.

Eveonline has got my interest as well, but haven't had the time to checkit out.

If you don't have time for WoW you certainly won't have time for EVE.
Most of the time spent in EVE is travelling and it can take a long time to get to your destination. also, depends on where you are, there is nothing to occupy your time while travelling.

also, skills are earned in real time. meaning that you can gain skills while you are offline. you can't do anything to make them level faster. skills can take hours for lower level skills and weeks for higher level skills. you can only train 1 at a time also.

I could someone running out of steam if you aren't raiding or pvp'ing at lvl 60, all that would be left is rep farming..you can only run scholo so many times.

Our guild Killed Nef for the first time Sunday night, and the Prophet Sekram in AQ40 for the first time last night, so we've got all of AQ40 to see and we are slowly getting people attuned for Naxxaramas.

Quit WOW and tried EVE and guild wars. Didn't hook me much so now I've been keeping busy with random games. Back to FF7 and internet games!

Plenty of solid older games out there to play while current developers spiral downwards into console oriented mediocrity. Sad, isn't it?

Thanks for the replys, I did try Guildwars when it came out, but it seems that you are always LFG there and im not a big fan of instances.

I do own oblivion and its a great game (with obscuro's mod = teh sex) but I kinda wanted to play with an old PnP pal so we started playing WoW.

VERY true.. I STILL to this day have Baldur's Gate 2, Torment, and Fallout 1, 2 installed on my computer. The amount of craftmanship and effort put into these games (and anything Black Isle (less lionheart)) keeps me coming back for more. I keep finding myself digging through bargin bins looking for these games that kept my college GPA in check. I mean really, play something as epic as the Baldur's Gate series and then load up WoW and you will see for yourself what kind of crap they are shoveling.

But I I digress, I guess what i was realyl looking for was something that my friend and I can play every few days together, thats challenging and engrossing and does not feel like an arms race (Read WoW).

Too much to ask? In today's industry ... probably.

NWN has thousands of user created modules to play. There are a few that approach the scope of BG2, and they are a blast to play. Plus its a lot easier to get NWN to run than the older Black Isle games. As good as those games were, they just weren't designed with 20in WS panels, Radeon 1900s, dual core CPUs, WinXP/Vista, etc. 🙁

If you don't have time for WoW you certainly won't have time for EVE. [q/]

This doesn't make sense at all. EVE is perfect for the casual player specifically for the skill training "con" you listed. You can log in for five minutes, set a new skill to train, and log off. A couple days later you're no worse for the wear when you do have the time to play a couple of hours. You learn to deal with the fact that skill training is real time pretty quickly. Realize that everyone is in the same exact boat.

Travel is a pain in any MMO. EVE is really no worse then WoW or SWG or what have you. You just don't have the pretty scenery that keeps you from getting bored for the first hour, after which it does become boring. In EVE, it's boring after 5-10 minutes. Also -

also, depends on where you are, there is nothing to occupy your time while travelling.

You most definitely were in Empire space if this was going on. Get into a 0.0 corporation and wander around lawless space and travel is perilous and exciting. You never know if the other side of the gate will be camped by a couple of ships.

Eve seems pretty cool but I wonder what the combat is like?

press 1 button to activate guns. tell your ship to close in to the other ship or wait for it to get to you. when in range, your guns starts shooting. set ship to stay at range. wait for enemy to die or enemy to kill you. you pretty much just say attack and wait.

I don't see how logging in to set a skill and logging out is considered playing a game. I've read many comments about EVE from many of its players who say they login to EVE and read a book, watch TV, alt tab out and read websites, or something else while they are "playing".

I'll agree with you that travel can be a pain in any game but EVE is 50x time worse. It can take literally half an hour or more to get to a destination. WoW is maybe a few minutes, max.

I did say "depending on where you are, you may have nothing to do while travelling". Otherwise you have to worry about some jackass ganker trying to kill you while you are trying to get to your destination.

hmph. That doesn't sound so fun.

You can say the same for any MMO. Really, what do any have to offer except pushing a couple of buttons in a pre-determined sequence? Except, EVE has a big difference. In a game like WoW, a priest is a priest. You'll expect him to heal a lot with some offense. A warrior is a tank and can take a lot of punishment. Very rarely do you stray outside those predefined roles.

In EVE, you stumble across a Osprey. It's a crappy cruiser that gets bonuses to mining. Most people think easy kill, especially if they see it sitting in an asteroid belt. Well if you play with the people that I do, you're in for a big surprise when it turns out that Osprey has teeth. My point is this: each ship is designed for a specific role, but that doesn't mean it can't be fit for something entirely different.

I don't see how logging in to set a skill and logging out is considered playing a game. I've read many comments about EVE from many of its players who say they login to EVE and read a book, watch TV, alt tab out and read websites, or something else while they are "playing".

I didn't say that was playing. I said it makes it easier for the casual people that can't devote 40+ hours a week to leveling up their character. It still doesn't substitute for good old fashioned experience, however. You can take two people in the same ship with the same skill points and the person who plays everyday for five hours is going to easily whip the guy who only plays one hour every 3-4 days four out of five times.

Otherwise you have to worry about some jackass ganker trying to kill you while you are trying to get to your destination.

That's life in a game that is geared very much towards PvP. Outside of Empire, it's kill or be killed. Harsh lessons, but if you're smart you learn very first how to adapt and fight back.

Eve Online if you dont mind being a newb for awhile.
It has perhaps too many avenues to specialize in, but it is very addictive if you find your niche in the game.

I quit not too long ago since Beta... I simply didn't have the time to play the game anymore.

Eve sounds good, but I think i might fire up Oblivion for awhile to get my mind off of WoW. Is there a trial period for a new Eve account, you know where i can play and if I like it stay on, and if not , just be out a few bucks(rather than the price of the game plus a month's subscription)?

What an absolute pile of bollocks!!!

Seriously ... all you did was fly around carebear space wasnt it? Then again my pirate char loves people like you. We call you 'Breakfast'

Yes there is a trial account thingy... look at the enormous banner at the top of http://www.eve-online.com/ 🙂

there is no alternative to WoW. i've tried them all.

1) Level 60 boredom

i quit for the opposite reason, i couldn't put forth the required time to run endgame instances with my guild.

2) Barrens Chat (and now the new and improved global LFG chat (take the barrens with you everywhere!!!))

that can be turned off.

3)Lame & repetitive item grinding.

join a GOOD guild.

4)Sweet rewards to people who run in bad-@ss guilds and scraps to everyone else. (yay for tier .5 but comeon it costs like 800gold or more to get the set (associated costs of materials and tips), and MC guilds get better for free)

get a good guild. it really is necessary for endgame.

5)Hobbled PvP

play on a pvp server instead of a normal server.

6) No real feeling of conflict or danger.

play on a pvp server instead of a normal server.
