Not sure which forum this topic belongs to, I'm hoping I've got it right. (If not, please move it to an appropriate forum plz)

In short, I need an air conditioner for my dad's office. The office is small. Roughly 10x13, or 130 square feet. There already is a space for a unit in the wall toward the outside. (roughly 26"x16") I need a recommendation. All the standard desired features are.. desired.

- Low noise but high performance
- Power efficient
- Light weight but high performance
- Durable and versatile

I know everything is a compromise. I'm looking for a best combination.

I have a Best Buy gift card, so if I'd very much like to buy one there, but it's in no way a hard limit. I will look for a better deal elsewhere if any.

Budget is ~$300.

Thank you in advance.

At $300 about the only thing is a window AC unit. You can get them pretty big though, so go for the biggest you can find. They also sell "through the wall" units which sounds more like what you need but a window one can probably be fitted in a similar way. Just make sure it's very well insulated or it will be a huge heat loss in winter unless you want to start removing it and reinstalling it every year.

Check Canadian Tire or Home Depot, or other hardware stores you may have. Just be sure to buy it NOW. As soon as the big heat rolls in they'll be out of stock everywhere.

Go big or go home

It's OVER 9000!!!!

Actually for quick reference 12,000 BTU is 1 ton. So for a small office you can get away with like 8000 or even lower.

I have a 1ton portable unit for my office that is about 100 square feet and it cools VERY fast. I tend to close the door or my cat pukes on my chair, so when I get in there in summer it can be like 30 degrees, so the ability to get it down 10 degrees in less than an hour is a must.

seems like you'd only need a 5-6,000 BTU unit based on your description.

I have GE window units in my bedroom and home office (I think I bought them at Sears) and have no complaints. they're both 6,000 BTU's and they keep the rooms pretty cold; I only ever have to turn them up to "medium" during heat waves, and I'm not sure I've ever had to crank them on "high."
