Well, let me tell you now... it isn't. It may have been true back in the days of the 8500, any maybe even up to the X series, but not now. Nvidia may still have a slight performance advantage in OpenGL games, but the very vast majority of games are DirectX anyway.Originally posted by: iu2687
sorry about what i said about ati. i read somewhere that ati cards have trouble supporting games with open gl like doom3. they perform well with half life 2 but their fps takes a nose dive on doom 3. geforce cards tend to be more steady on more games. i never ran any benchmarks myself but this is just what i've heard. not completely sure if it's true

Also, Dug777 is probably one of the most qualified to tell you: Nvidia's image quality is nohere near as good as ATI's. Check out the 22-page thread on Nvidia's blocky shadows in FarCry. And most hardware sites do agree that overall ATI's image quality is better, especially AF. (Nvidia's AA up to 4xAA is the same as ATI's, but their 8x and 16x modes are unmatched).
i need an agp card that can play ut2k7 and crysis on medium to high settings. by this i mean 4xaa and 1024x768.
If you don't use AA/AF, Nvidia and ATI have nearly identical IQ. I've seen systems use both cards and noticed no difference. With AA/AF (Which I find pointless to use considering the performance hit...and I never notice jaggies or anything) I would agree that ATI may be a better choice then.Originally posted by: Sc4freak

The Far Cry issue never happened to me. Neither did that shimmering thing. I think this whole ATI>Nvidia is some mental thing that people have, unless you want to get into AA/AF.
Don't base your card purchase off of advice about ATI>Nvidia in IQ.

Besides, ATi has the advantage when it comes to the Source engine, so it's a wash either way.

the 7800gtx has a 20% performance advantage over the x1800xt at 2048*1536, not exactly what i would call a win for the ATI card![]()

Also, the architecture of the x1800xt is designed and optomized fro 1600x1200 while the 7800gtx was desgned from scratch to be optomized for 2048x1536.
