Need AGP 4X card that does 1680x1050

Was looking at getting a 20" widescreen LCD but need to get a video card for my 2nd PC that can do 1680x1050 and MB can only do 4x AGP. I'd like to go as cheap as possible (no gaming) while still getting DVI, any suggestions for a 4x card? Or 8x cards that are backwards compatible?

I believe a 6600GT can do that resolution, not entire sure though. I thought all video cards could handle all resolutions?

EDIT: found a cheaper option - a 6200. This card sucks for 3D, though - so before you get it, make sure you NEVER plan to do anything in 3D with this card. It should support the right resolution.

I'm not entire sure about the resolution thing but I thought all video cards could do any resolution.

EDIT 2: for more money, you could get an ATI X1k series card. Avivo will have much better quality when doing videos and such, but it's up to you whether or not 2D video performance will justify an extra $50 premium. $90 after rebate and shipping

Thanks for the suggestion on the 6200, but according to gigabyte's website this card supports just about every widescreen format except 1680x1050. This is the exact problem I keep running into. That resolution seems to be hard to find on cheap cards.

ATI cards all support 1680x1050, but the resolution will show on the list only if the attached display demands it.

8x AGP cards MUST, by the book of AGP, be backward compatible to 4x capable mainboards.

The latest driver release has dropped compatibility with everything lower than the Radeon 9550, so for continued driver support from ATI, it'll have to be at least that.

I ran a Dell 2005FPW at 1680x1050 with a Radeon 7500 just fine. Obvioulsy, no gaming, but it works great for 2D. I plugged my Powerbook (FX 5200Go) into the same monitor, and it worked fine at 1680x1050 as well.

Currently using a ATI X850XT PE AGP here at 1680 res, but its not a cheap card by any means.

my voodoo3 3000 card supports 1680x1050,hehe, you can have it. Actually I'm using it for a word processing/music machine for school. Pretty sure it supports 1680x1050, but then again I'm using a 15" monitor, so I don't have a firsthand experience. Aflac's linked x1300 is an OK card for your purposes, but don't get his, get saphire or something, HIS' service/RMA stinks.

The point here isn't whether the /chip/ supports it (they all do - VGA chips have been freely programmable for ages), but whether the drivers do.
Early (or badly done) DVI cards might not go high enough in DVI frequency to do it reliably, but that's about all there is to "strange" resolution support.

A visit to the "List All Modes" button should clear things up.

My current system is on the old i850 chipset and has an XFX 6600GT running on AGP 4x. No problems running dual monitors at 1680 x 1050, been doing so for months.

I've got an old onboard AGP2x MX440 that runs 1600x1200 fine which is even more stressful than 1680x1050.

My 9600 does 1920x1200 fine, and I haven't updated video drivers in a while. Per Peter's advice, I wouldn't try my 9200 with newer drivers (though I've already sold that card anyway).

All moden video cards can handle 1680 x 1050. You just may need to try a few different drivers, or manually add the resolution. NVidia drivers will let you add any resolution you want if its not already listed. My old Ti4200 supports 1680 x 1050.

A few months ago I couldn't get my SiS Xabre to go beyond 1600x1200, but making it happen is a project I've put off for several months. It may be workable now.
