Need affordable, quiet 350W power supply

NFS4

No Lifer
In my quest to make my case quieter, I need a nice 350W power supply with a quiet cooling fan (possibly one with a variable speed fan if it isn't like $80 or something). I'd prefer not to spend over $50.

Or to take the cheap way out, can anyone recommend a quiet fan from SVC to replace the one in my power supply? I currently have an Enhance ENP-0735

How about bag the $50, and replace the whole case and PSU with an Antec 1080awg ? 430 watt, very quiet, very cool, and lots of space. I got mine at Fry's for $99 !! You live for this stuff, and $99 can't break you....... I read your stuff all the time, and good work, so you deserve a good case and PSU...

or be a stingy bum like me and get a cheapo 400w for $17 shipped from pricewatch. its starts up so loud i think its chopping down a tree, but then silences to one of the quitest fans i ever heard as soon as xp loads....i think the mystery is half the fun

1) There are no Frys around here (at least not within 500 miles)
2) I like my current case

I'm sorry, but I can't believe that a $17 power supply is worth buying.....Quality is much better than quantity..... See other threads on this.

NFS4, sorry, where are you located ? If you are anywhere close, let me know, and the next time they run the special, I can pick one up and ship it to you (what are friends for?) Do you at least like the case and PSU ??

Any 80mm fan will work in a PSU. Most recent PSUs have a thermal fan controller built in - so don't buy a fan with a controller built into it. You'll probably have to cut and splice the fan wires as most are soldered inside the psu. I replace noisy or dead PSU fans all the time. Either of the SVC branded ones would be fine. You could bring the tach wire out thru an opening in the PSU case and hook it to a mobo connector to monitor the fan.
. If you decide you want a PSU, either the Sparkle or the HEC (Heroichi - listed under Compucase on newegg) are hard to beat for price/quality/low noise.

I believe the Antec TruePower 330W is going for sub-$50 at Amazon with one of the $5 off coupons floating around F@twallet. Definitely the quietest fans I've ever used, and even those who doubt the hype over their superior power regulation tend to agree they sport the quietest fans around. 92mm intake and 80mm outtake...excellent PSUs. 😀

My dad just replaced his generic powersupply(it blew up!) with an Enlight ATX 360W P4 Power Supply EN-8420934. We were amazed that it was completely silent, I had to put my hand in front of it too make sure it was working. Only $39 w/free shipping at Newegg.

If your PS is working well, quiet it down by replacing the fan with a Panaflow L1A 80mm. I've done this several times and it has always worked out well. L1A @ SVC

If you want a new PS, the Antec True330 is very quiet, but is $53 +$7 shipping from Newegg.

That wouldn't be the Powmax 400w would it? ;-)

I'd suggest the superflower/TTGI power supplies, as they have been quality power supplies in my experience (running a 350watt "silent" one as we speak -- xp1600+)

here's a link, they're reasonably priced, and in your range it appears:
directron's p/s's $30-69 range

the first 4-6 of the p/s listed are the ttgi/superflower brand I do believe.

FYI the red 420ss is really nice... my friend just got his in the mail, *shiny*, a couple fans, switchable speed/temp control, sleeved ATX cable (not all of them though, someday they'll do that hopefully though), gold grills (if that matters at all heh)

good luck!

I wholeheartedly agree with the above statement, and use a quiet Panaflo in all of my powersupplies.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll go with the Panaflo. Cheap fix for a power supply that is otherwise great 😀

The trouble with the Panaflo is that it doesn't have enough oomph if it is the only exhaust fan in the case. Better to use a little louder, 32+ CFM, fan like the SVC brand if it's going to be the only exhaust for the case.
Need to move that hot air out of the case as well as the PSU.

I have the Chieftec Dragon case (Antec SX1040B clone) and only use a single Panaflo L1a style fan in my powersupply (blows out), and no other exhaust fans even though I have brackets for (2) more 80mm fans. I have (2) Panaflo 80mm L1a style intake fans and a Thermaltake Spark 7 w/ fan running ~2500rpm. My board/case temp is 29C & CPU temp is 35C w/ an ambient room temp of ~23C.

Is the Panaflo L1A out of stock at svc, or am I just too dumb to figure out how to get it added to my cart? 😕
