Need advise on sub $350 mini-itx box

Folks,

I need to build a mini-itx box that can play .mp4 files at 20Mbps bitrate. The system will run minimal Ubuntu + VLC player.

Last year, I tried to build a Intel atom based box. However, playing an mp4 file at 20Mb bitrate was very jittery. I am hoping the new breed of CPUs have overcome this problem.

For the new box, I don't need a bluray player. Also, instead of expensive SSD drive, I think a 500G notebook drive would work.

I would appreciate it if you could recommend a configuration that will fit my budget.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,
Peter

I just wanted to add one more thing. If mini-IPX does not fit the budget, I guess I can go with micro-ATX.

However, the case still needs to be small and the power supply must be external.

Appreciate your help.

Regards,
Peter

might check out a Celeron 847 (sandy bridge) based system.

It's alot more powerful than the Atom's are and doesn't use much more power.

How big of a case can you use? Silverstone has a couple of very small ITX cases coming out soon, the ML05 and PT13.

The PT13 will only take thin mini-ITX motherboards like the Gigabyte B75. It's also external PSU only so that'd be about what you're looking for.

Silverstone PT13 ($50) i think is about what it'll sell for.
Gigabyte H77 thin ITX ($120)
Celeron G1610 ($40-$50)
2x2GB DDR3 204pin memory ($30)
500GB WD Scorpio Black ($60)

Total price: $310.

Another choice:
Antec ISK 110 ($90)
Asus C8HM70-I ($80)
2x2GB DDR3 204pin memory ($30)
500GB WD Scorpio Black ($60)

Total Price: $260

I would not use this for music or video. Only has analog Audio plugs and only has VGA Video. Not even HDMI. 1.1gHZ Celeron? Limited upgrade options. What happens if it is not powerful enough?

There is a HDMI Version also:
ASUS C8HM70-I/HDMI

These are BGA Ball Grid Array so you can not upgrade the processor. I would look for a benchmark on this or a detailed review.
