Much like the title asks. I have been doing a lot of encoding experimenting for some customers of mine. I am fairly new to this and could use some recommendations please. I have been authorized to purchase a card to transfer video input from VHS/Hi8 media(and possibly others) and convert it into media files. It needs to be fairly flexible and come with decent drivers and software for XP. I could easily use my WinFast TV2000XP for simple work. But these folks are willing to reimburse me to the tune of $300~400 so I feel a free upgrade for me coming on here . I am not looking to use this as a primary video card so a PCI device is preferred. Recommendations?suggestions?

Although it's a little bit out of your price range, you might seriously consider the Pinnacle DV500+. It has analog and digital in/out plus comes with Adobe Premiere 6 plus other good software. Just a quick search at Newegg showed it at $474, so if you have to pay a little out of your pockets, it would still be worth it.

What about a friend of mine who has a Radeon all-in-wonder card? should he get another card, or just better editing software???

Cool and thanks for your input, I'll be sure to look into that one. I'm not as worried abut the software package as I am about drivers for XP. I do not wish to spend hours setting this card up.

*EDIT* I guess I should add that I already ahve most Adobe products including Premier 6. More software is just a bonus. I would be more interested with additional hardware features and the like. A nice breakout box is a definate plus+++.

There isn't anything really worth "upgrading" to in the $300-400 range especially if you need analog capture. You have to up your price range at least the $500-600 range before you will get truly better products. The DV500 Plus which was suggested before is in that price range and a good option.
