I have a meeting to attend tomorrow morning and figured I would wear a sport coat ... but the coat I have is dark navy blue and has gold buttons (instead of dark colored regular buttons). Are such coats typically only worn for evening cocktail meetings ?

I hate to spend money on a sport coat ... since I plunked money this weekend on a HD-DVD player ;)

I have always stayed away from gold buttons period.

On that note in the hospital here I dont think I have ever seen anyone wearing one with gold buttons at any of our daily meetings.

Edit: Wear a nice shirt/tie combo and just carry the DVD player I think you would do better. For bonus points put the movie 300 in said player and bring it to the meeting.

You will be OK, but the gold buttons are a bit of a relic. You might want to see if a tailor at the mall can replace them while you wait with dark buttons.

I bought it several years ago at Mens Warehouse ... I believe they sold them as evening jackets. I do recall wearing them for such occasions ... and do remember others there wearing similar coats (i.e with similar buttons).
