Need advice spending money! Quick!

In a few hours my parents are going to give me the OK to order some things from Newegg to build my brother a computer with. They also said that I could order like $300 of stuff for myself (their feeling VERY generous). Anyways I need some advice on upgrading my rig. Here are my stats:

CPU: P4 1.9ghz
RAM: 256mb DDR
HD: 160gb 7200RPM
GPU: Geforce3 Ti 200, 64mb
OS: Win XP/Linux
Brand: Dell

Anyways I am thinking of getting 256mb more of RAM but that only puts me like $80 into the hole. I'd like to get a new case but I have a Dell and people have discouraged against it. My graphics card could use an upgrade but I want to wait for Geforce 5s to blow the 9700 out of the water. Anyone have some ideas? Questions?

ram first what about a wd *mb cache HD? or perhaps better speakers/sound card.

and can your parents adopt me? 😉

how about a 512mb stick of ram?

do you like/want to overclock? maybe upgrade cpu/motherboard and keep the ram/videocard

or upgrade videocard to gf4 ti4200 or something and 256mb ram

Mcveigh:

I bought a 120gb WD 8mb HD a few months ago (I origionally had a 40gber so that makes 160gb)

No they cannot adopt you

Champ:
I'd like to try overclocking at some point. I have a Dell and people have discouraged me from changing things around. I ultimatly want to get a nice new case, new mobo, and pimp my rig so to speak 🙂. Got any advice on a sweet ass P4 mobo i could buy? I know nothing about mobos except for what i want in one 🙂. I think I am going to hold off on my video card for a few months and see what develops.

asus p4pe
it has all the right (new) features other than dual channel ddr
also its a good overclocker

if you dont care about features, abit it7max and asus p4b533 are awesome boards as well
i havent read much about the new granite bay boards (dual channel ddr)
from what i understand, its not much better...but maybe im wrong as i havnt read much about them and maybe im confusing myself 😱

Errr. I always have this problem. Does anyone know what kind of Ram I need for a Dell 8200? : )

I have 2 128mb sticks in it right now. I think its Rambus or DDR but im not sure and i dunno the speed either.

If I were in your shoes with $300, I'd start getting away from that Dell and into a real computer. Maybe use the money to get a nice case (Lian Li?) and a new mobo. You *should* be able to transfer the rest of your stuff over to the new box.

If I were you, i'd ask them to just give you 300 and put it in the bank or something. Look at your system, it freakin flys.

Or, get a new monitor, if you must.

go to www.crucial.com and enter in your speces. it will tell you.

remember dell has proprietary powersupplys and motherboards, they don't mix and match w/ commercial ones.

Yea. Thats why I plan on buying a nice Dragoon case with a 450w PS with the new motherboard 🙂. I've asked the question before about changing my Dell parts into a new case (I want some extra bays for other drives, I want to start moding, I want to have a window and a sleek looking case). Someone said that for some reason, the case would become noisy. Only 1 person said that so I'm thinking that was just with his experience.

So far I have on my list:
1 Asus p4pe mobo $124
1 Black Antec Dragon Case $69
2 Kingston 256mb RAM $148
1 Enermax FT Panel $20

I can't wait until I can place the order. This will be so sweet 🙂

I'm thinking of putting an oval window on the top of the case, adding a 120mm blowhole at the top, maybe lighting some of it, and making some nice rounded cables. Oh yea, also spray painting the inside a nice orange/red.

Can someone recommend a good CPU cooler fan that looks good and does a good job?

Oh yea... Also, my system dosn't "fly" as well as it used to/as well as I want it to. I hope doing some of these things will help it. I am also planning on taking this rig to college (1.5 years away), so I want to create one of the best computers I can now and upgrade it when the time comes. Thats kinda my justificaton for getting that Asus board 🙂.

it will be ancient in 1.5 years, sad to say. 🙁
does that case come with a power supply? if not you'll need one.
