Need advice: signed up for a course and now I'm getting jerked around (I think)

Well August 27th 2004 I signed up for a correspondence course and paid the fee involved.

I was told (and I have the booklet/student guide which states the same in writing):

"From the date we process your course request, you have one year to complete the course work and final exam."

One year would be this August 26th 2005.

I have done 3/4 of the course work, but, due to college finals I've been getting killed with work and haven't started the last 1/4 of it. If I write the exam now, I'll most -definitely- fail.

I called them up to schedule the exam and the lady in charge DEMANDED that I write it this week on the 9th. I'm all "WTF it says I have one year" "No, no thats not right, you have to get it done earlier because this course was phased out, you HAVE to write the exam".

I then attempted to contest it saying that I was told I had one year to do it and my book states the same (1 YEAR...not 1 YEAR minus 16 days). She says that it has to be processed by them and they have to do paperwork associated with it too. WTF? Thats on their time isn't it? It ONLY states that I have to complete my work units and write the exam... not "you have 1 year minus 2 weeks so we can do xyz"

I'm wondering what my options are. Its run/funded by the province. The course is to complete my high school diploma so it means a lot to me (yeah I'm a drop out....went to college as a mature student). It is operated by the ministry of education.

Anyway I can put in a grievance or some crap with a higher up? She was quite adamant I wasn't going to change a single thing.

If I could do it on the 22nd I'd be happy (college done this week so I'd be able to attack it head on). They run their testing rooms all day so it wouldn't be a problem in that sense for them.

I know I shouldn't have left it so late but I've had some other priorities (college) so please spare me flames :p

Shes head of the correspondence division so that difficult.

I think I'll go and visit with the administrator of that facility/school. They have a principal-like person there.

I just checked their 2005 guide and it says the same thing so their policy certainly hasn't changed. It states "one year to complete your course work and write the final exam".

Is this part of a real school such as a university? If so, there should be an appeals process. Should be in the student handbook.

If the book/guide says one year, then you have one year, unless you were told in writing that you have a different time frame.

Sounds like the staffers just want to get their jobs done early so they can bolt.

Thats EXACTLY what came to mind. Hrm, if I wrote it around the 20th of August? They definitely want a vacation during that time frame before it starts up again.

I'm just not sure what I can do. I'm such a timid person that raising hell would be...difficult. I'll have to do it though..

Its run by the ministry of education. Province-funded and operated I guess you could say. It iss part of our public school system (Ontario Canada).
