Need Advice on VCR-DVD combo brands

I'm getting ready to head out the door to buy my Mom a VCR-DVD combo and I'd appreciate some opinions on these brands; Panasonic, Phillips, Sony, Toshiba. The main requirement is that it'll be most likely to play her old VHS tapes that were recorded on a variety of other machines. She bought a Zenith VCR a few months back and absolutely hates it because her old tapes and tapes recorded on other machines are unwatchable on it. You also can't watch a tape recorded on her machine in my RCA.

Anyone have any helpful opinons or advice?

Edit: The machines I'm comparing are all about $120 except the Sony which is about $130.

I'd take a Panasonic.
They are all so cheaply made these days that anyone would probaly be just fine. I am just still stuck in the past when my Panasonic VCR held up for 12 years before it broke.

I got a samsung unit from best buy about a year ago. I like it but don't know about the tape issue you got.

I have an old panasonic VCR from about 9 years ago. Still works great although we no longer use it since we have a TIVO now.

I know what you guys mean about the older Panasonics, I have one that's still going strong, but sometimes the newer ones aren't as well made as the old ones. Just wondering if that's the case with them.

I've never owned a Samsung so I'm kind of afraid to try something I know nothing about.

Yep, I've tried everything to adjust the tracking on her Sylvania model, no luck.
