Hi all im new to these forums,

I currently own a custom pc which is 5 years old now and i think its time for an upgrade :D. The processor is an intel e-6600. I am thinking of getting the i7- 3770k, im wondering how much of a difference it would really make, is it worth the upgrade. It also has a nvidia gt 9500 graphics card and am thinking of upgrading to the gtx 960Ti and i have 2.5gb ddr2 ram. It currently runs on 32bit windows 7. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks :)

Welcome.:D

What do you do with the computer? If it's anything intensive, you'll most likely fall out of your seat with the difference in speed.

well in terms of work i do a bit of video and photo editing but not a great deal it is sluggish with video editing and would love to see an increase in performance, i love playing games on it and have in the past since i don't own a console, i used to play black ops on it but on medium resolution at 30fps, i have diablo 3 and it runs fine on meduim settings hitting 40fps, i also have skyrim but will not install it because it wont run properly. I also have battlefield 3 but it barely runs at 15fps and im a flight simulator x enthusiast, but once again hardware wont let me get a full gaming experience, i would love to run these games to there full potential so i can enjoy the experience when i find the time for it. I would also love to play black ops 2, metro 2033, max payne 3 and crysis 3 when it comes out. I have roughly $1,350 to play with on building a new box and already have a flat screen monitor. would a gtx 660ti and i7 3770k with 8gb ddr3, oc and radiator cooled, and om on an ssd knock my socks off?

oh and i find my current system tends to get sluggish if i run a bunch of webpages after it being on for 8 or so hours and even if i load a media player and one game it will become snail like, would the knew system be the same if i load that amount of applications?

Definitely could use that upgrade. It would be worth every penny.

Your feet might come off with those socks.:)

No, it should handle it excellently.

thought it might :D, that's exactly the effect i was looking for but will lie to keep my limbs wouldn't be able to afford prosthetics after this :), i know i probably kept my old machine for a fair bit over its used by date (putting it mildly), how long would this kind of system keep good for?

My guess would be at least 5 years. Both CPU and GPU manufacturers have been slowing down speed increases, so it should stay pretty relevant.

yeah :), i know ill most likely upgrade the gpu over the 5 years and maybe the ram to a higher latency from 1600 and maybe a bigger hard drive and eventually buy a pro audio sound card but should be sweet :) thanks for all your help

Just a tip Ram latency and ram frequency are two different things.

When you reference 1600 mhz you are talking about Ram frequency or speed not latency.

When most people talk about latency they are talking about the Cas latency on the memory sticks so Cas 7 or Cas 8 memory.

And coming from a machine that is 5 years old I say do it you will be surprised how much faster new machines are even more so if you haven't used an SSD yet in a computer.

In 5 years you will be able to buy a tablet that can do everything you need. Hell, a HD 7770 installed in your E6600 machine will get you most of the way. A more modest i3 will get you the rest of the way. I dont see a reason for you to get an i7. 5 years ago an E6600 was a budget upgrade for most people. You should go with the same logic you did back then.

A tablet currently cannot replace a PC.

and I doubt in 5 years time this will change.

Considering he said he is doing some photo and video work an i7 with 8 threads sounds like its a good fit for his workload.

installing a 7770 will improve gaming fps for some games and no nothing for the cpu limited games. BF3 will still be unplayable!

For all the games he has listed a E6600+7770 = fail!

For someone that uses a pc for 5 years it better for him to go with a machine that will last than an i3!

Wants to play BF3, which scales with more cores.
Does video encoding.
Could use a nice big screen instead of a wimply little thing that's difficult to type in and game with.
Hell yeah, he should get an i5 at the very least and an i7 will be satisfactory for what he wants NOW.

Go for the 3770! Looks like 3+ times as fast as your curr chip based on Anand's benches!

Not sure what that last part there was intended to read (regarding the SSD), but my advice is yes to all of the above provided you intend to put an acceptably sized (>120GB) SSD in there as the boot/app drive.

Doesn't have to be absolute latest and greatest for SSD, anything Vertex3 or newer will be gravy.
