Hey guys, I need some advice on how to upgrade my semi-dinosaur computer. My power supply won't turn on anymore so at a minimum I'd need to upgrade that. I'm mainly using this as a HTPC, but may play games once in awhile (hopefully I can run Starcraft 2).

Here's my current setup:

DFI Lanparty NF4 Ultra-D
AMD Athlon 4000+ San Diego
OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Dual Channel Rev 2
Sapphire X850XT 256MB
Audigy 2ZS
WD Caviar 160GB
OCZ Powerstream 420W (broke)

I'm thinking of getting this OCZ StealthXStream 500W, found it at a good price on Slickdeals:
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0276315

As for the memory, I'm thinking of upgrading to 2-4GB depending on what I can find either here or on Ebay.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks.

yep, I'm near both. not looking to spend too much unless I can find good parts at a steal price.

Microcenter has a deal if you purchase an AMD 630, 555, 720, or 965, you get $30 off any motherboard. http://www.microcenter.com/specials/..._amdbundle0406
Previously this deal was $50 off any mobo, or even better some mobos were bundled for an extra $15-$50.

Did you look at the front page of Microcenter's site, or the update on the hot deals thread?

The deal isn't $30 off, it's $50 off a mobo if you buy one of those CPUs you listed (for $100 or more). If you buy a lesser CPU, you get $25 off a mobo.

Nevermind, it looks like it used to be $50 off yesterday, dammit. They changed it to $30 off. Was planning on buying a bundle Sunday for a friend. Have to tell him the bad news.

Wow, Microcenter really changed that in a hurry. Clicking on the link on that page to show all compatible AMD motherboards, is also showing Intel G41-chipset mobos.

Edit: This is the link that I was looking at yesterday: http://www.microcenter.com/specials...ium=tower_bnr&utm_campaign=hmpg_amdbundle0406

check out hotdeals forums like slickdeals for deals on video cards and such, many are good around the 50 mark.
as said, frys bundle, sadly ram prices are kind of poor these days. theres no saving that old system, its too old to save. only minor things like the soundcard or harddrives will be transferable.

fry's bundles arent always 100% reliable if they're really good just FYI. we usually sell out on the REALLY fucking good ones (like that PH2 965 + gigabyte MA785GE-UD2H for $165 couple weeks ago) in a few hours, the moderately good ones 2-3 days. if you really want to get a good deal on a frys combo you gotta get up 7am friday, check the newspaper in your local area that shows Fry's adds, and then go in at 8am anyway even if you dont see what you like in the paper, since they arent always all listed due to space constraints. that phenom 2 combo i mentioned was gone by 12PM the day it went up, and i was lucky enough to be scheduled for a 11AM shift so i could get the last new box board for a friend's rig. i would say you want to aim for a similar rig to what i set up for my friend. depending on your budget, you can mix and match with what i recommend.

phenom 2 quad of some type + good board (gigabyte or MSI most likely) from frys combo
4GB DDR3 ram
HD5770
60GB OCZ agility or solid 2 SSD for a boot drive.

those are the parts i bought for my friend, and i also had a 690, a 430w antec neopower (384w 12v), and a 500GB Barracuda for some storage. pop win7 on it and you're g2g for another few years

i got the frys bundle this weekend.

the board is actaully not bad. ddr3 , am3 and its the latest revision so it has ACC support. there is even a bios update now with phenom II x6 support.

I've always been jealous of faxon. Lives near a frys to get all the good deals, AND works at one. I imagine that'd be my dream (backup) job

Then be jealous no more...it could be much worse. Here in Oz (Australia), there are no Fry's and no MCs...and prices tend to be at least 30% higher than anywhere in the US.
Of course the fact that nobody has a gun, there are almost no gangs (except the bikies) and the crime rate is so low does tend to make up for it...:)

Yeah but you gotta deal with the abos and puftahs

I actually just priced out a PC for an asstralian friend of mine the other day, Some things were kinda gouged (5850s for 350-400AU, $50US PSUs for $75+, 8gb DDR3 for $400), but some stuff (CPUs, Mobos, HDs) were pretty much right at US prices
