Need Advice on software piracy.

I have a small problem. A friend of mine makes music and encodes the tracks onto mp3s. He also makes his own videos, but he's real paranoid. He was wondering if there's a way to make a disc read only, but not copiable. In other words, he wants to be able to show off his work, but is worried about people making copies of it. I told him, quite humorously, that if I knew of how to do such a thing, software developers would throw money at my feet. But I thought I'd throw it out there. Any ideas? The closest I could think of was to encrypt the data using a rotating password that could only be obtained thru a website I set up with an authentication script...kinda like a software implementation of a secureid, but first, I don't really know how to create a rotating password and second, once someone has the password, they have read access which means it is copiable.

Its not going to be easy. The big recording companies would have adopted if it was. Hey its not like he NEVER use file-share proggie right?
 
yeah, my goal is not to make a fool proof copy protection. It's more to make it just hard enough to duplicate so as not to be worth the trouble to most people. I mean, they are just independent music and movies. The show and destroy thing doesn't work either cuz he wants to be able to put them out like AOL cds. It's kinda my fault since I showed him that his ending credits could be altered and his work plagiarised. He worked hard on it, so he's kinda paranoid about copying.
 
This can be done no matter what. If someone is that desperate to take someone else's work, they will do it.

Tell your friend to copyright his work, which isn't very hard, and then not be so paranoid.
 
There is technically no way of protecting data from being duplicated once read access to it is allowed. If it's videos we're talking about, then someone who wants it bad enough can just pass the video signal through a digital recorder, kind of like passing the video signal through an overhead projector. Granted, the quality/resolution of this video may not be as good as the original, but that may not matter.
Same goes for audio -- the signal can either be passed through a "middleman" that would record it, or if that wasn't viable, then someone can just set up a microphone in front of the speakers.

It is already copyrite'd a copyrite is automatic it becomes copyrited upon conception in your mind. Do a search for copyrite.

With videos, he could put a small embossed logo in the corner with his name or something. Its not worth the effort for most people to try to remove it. With sounds, I think there was some kind of digital watermarking that you could do. While it doesnt stop people copying it, at least you can PROVE its yours.

True but if it ever became a court case, your mind wont prove crap! But dated recorded works can hold a bit. It is best to make it official. I have a really good book on these laws, I will try to dig it out.
