Need advice on replacing external hard drive in Maxtor 3000LE case.

My hard drive does not seem to work in my Maxtor 3000LE external USB case. After taking this case apart I see a Maxtor 5400 rpm , 40GB hard drive plugged into the USB controller. Has anyone ever replaced a hard drive in a external case? Can I use a larger capacity drive running 7200rpm? Any help would be appriciated.
