need advice on golf (clubs) for newbie

I decide to give golf a try and wondering which golf club I should get.
I'm thinking about getting one driver and one iron for now.
Which brand that I should consider? should I get a used one at local store if it cheaper?
And there is a local driving range that is offering 5 X 1 hour group lesson for $99. Is that a good deal?

They're "Clubs" not "Sticks."
As for what to get.....a whole set is preferable. If you just want to hack around at the driving range for awhile, you could get just a long iron maybe a 3 or 5 and a fairway wood. If you want to play at a pitch-n-putt type place (3 Par) you're also going to need a putter and maybe a wedge.

if you are just starting and never played before, just get a cheap set of clubs. in minnesota i got a $100 set of clubs with a driver, one and three wood. you don't need expensive clubs for just beginning...have you ever played? you might not like it, so why waste the money. if you are just going to get a driver and an iron, make sure to get a putter too....

Used is a good way to get clubs, too.
My dad bought a new set of clubs, bag and everything, so he gave me his old set.

was just thinkin that myself LOL, anyways, I would buy a few used clubs just to start out (3 wood, a mid iron, a wege, and a putter would be a decent start just to guage your interest in the game) I would definitely suggest getting lessons to start out, in a couple of months you will have the basics and can just go out and teach yourself the rest.

First off, I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do. Secondly, lessons are a great idea, and the price you qouted sounds pretty good. Sometimes, you can get practice range priviledges thrown in too.

As far as clubs go, wait until after a lesson or two. UNLESS your pro says you need clubs prior.

You will at minimum need a 3 wood, 5 iron, 9 iron, and putter. But probably will want a full set very soon (if you like the game at all) which is PW-3I and two or three woods (which are now made of metal). Expect to pay anywhere from $200 - 500 depending on your budget and expendable income. I would suggest going towards a low end set for now, and then buying a mid-range set in a year or two depending on how fast you pick up the skills.

It's the hardest game/sport you'll ever try, if you are not a patient, calm person your going to do a lot of swearing 😉 BTW, I don't know how it is where you live but here in florida you can have "knock offs" of expensive clubs made customed taylored to your height, dominate side, ect... for under 500$ and I've been told by great golfers that starting out with clubs like that will significantly shorten your learning curve and enhance your enjoyment of the game/sport.

Why only two clubs? If you are set on owning only two clubs, stay away from the driver or any low numbered clubs. Most golfers with a few years of playing experience still can't hit those clubs with success. Get a 7 iron and a putter. The seven iron is easier to hit and putting is the most important aspect of the game.

If you want to do this right, get a whole set of clubs and take the $99 lessons. A complete set can be had for under $200. Don't worry about brand. Go to any store or garage sale, pick up a club, swing it if you can, and buy it for it's feel. If it feels comfortable, that's the one you want. In time, depending on how much you play and practice, you can start being picky about your equipment.
Equipment does matter and there are clubs that are easier and more player friendly to hit than others, but learning a good golf swing should be your first concern. There are countless golfers with $1k clubs in their bag and they still can't break 100.

$99 is a good deal.

yamahaXS,
that's a great advice, thanks.
I forgot to mention that I already have a fairway wood (I guess) and iron that I got from Target.
I guess I will use these for the lesson first then see.
I've been to driving range for a month now and kinda like it. so far I taught myself. not very good. almost hit people yesterday 🙁

for all, I've edit the post. sorry about the stick thing. don't mean to be ignorant, just clueless.

I've seen local store here sell use wood (such as PING, Callaway, etc) for about $99 each. Should I get one of those if I need it?

acutally, sticks is slang, and I call my clubs sticks all the time.

Woods are probably the clubs with the most variation in quality, design, and price. Ideally you will want a club that matches your swing, BUT as a beginner, you will shoot better by learning how to swing rather than buying high end clubs (ping, callaway, ect... are all high end). Your pro can help you after he has seen how fast your swing, and how consistent you are. I wouldn't buy anymore single clubs until after you have bought a full set of irons, b/c many times low end iron sets will include woods that are good enough for now.

If you do buy high end clubs, go with used clubs, but be wary of used high end Irons, as they are sometimes customized so for the previous owner's swing, which MIGHT interact with your swing in a very bad way.
