In august I am getting $5k insurance settlement wanna buy a car.

I can't find a job so I cant afford buy new one and making monthly payments. So my only option is to buy used one. I just need good reliable car to commute for pleasure, dont need it to be racing car or super looking to pick up girls, cause I am already engaged. I need to go apply for permit than take driving lessons from driving school or ask my uncle to teach me. At this point I dont know when I will get stable job, I been looking none stop for 6months. So I am thinking to get 2k-3K used car in case god forbid I get into accident or it brakes down I can tow it to junk yard and buy new one. Is it right choice or I need to spend full $5k on used car

I think the general consensus around here is to look into Japanese/European sub compacts for your best bet in this price category.

The 2.2l-2.5l dodges aren't bad. They are underpowered, except the turbo version, but are reliable and if something does break parts are cheap. If you really want to go cheap and don't car at all about looks I see late 80s dodge omnis in good shape all the time for $800 or less.

Stay 87 or newer if you do go with the dodge. I think thats when they went to fuel injection and the carbs they used before weren't the best.

Look for trades papers or whatever the hell they are called. They are just a paper with nothing but classified adds in them.

Here's a similar thread worth reading.

I agree with thedarkwolf look for car trader newspaper, probably found in your downtown area, they're usually free.
