Hello everybody!

This is like my second post to AnandTech and I am a giant newbie, so please bare with me here..:D

Anyways, i'm planning on buying a new setup consisting of Abit's new KT7A-RAID mobo, and a Duron 850Mhz. Naturally, i'm going to overclock this mother to at least 1GHZ (attempt, at least) and I really have no idea on God's green earth what is the best Fan and Heatsink to use. If anybody could post some feedback on this, i'd greatly appreciate it! :)

Most people will tell you to either get HedgeHog or the Alpha 6650 (did I get the number wrong??) Anyway...these 2 are the top choices and they perform neck to neck with each other...

In terms of fan...if you don't mind the noice, get the Delta...that's the most powerful blower...(or sucker for sucking air out from heatsink)

I have a Hedgehog myself with Delta fan....taking my Duron700 to POST at 1000...but unstable...so only at 950 now...still tweaking for extra Mhz.

Are you talking about the Alpha 6035 or whatever? I get really confused between all the different FOP/6035/PEP660 or whatever that I have no idea :)

Noise isn't a giant problem but I would like a quiet fan, nothing too monstrous.

Thanks

I read the same thing when checking out Anandtech's HSF roundup. That's probably the combo that I will buy, unless anybody has any bad experiences with Duron Overclocking?? If I didn't mind the noise I would get the Hedgehog/Delta.

Thanks again guys, you have all been a big help.

Thanks for the reply Mike.

Since Anandtech's roundup didn't include the PEP66, could you [guys] tell me anything about it - performance-wise?

I'm doing a very similar system, and this thread has helped me a bit. I would like to just tack on a question beyond what Kizmit asks - is getting a copper shim worth it? I'm looking to get my Taisol and Arctic Silver from Inflow Direct, and wondered if another $12 for a shim for my duron is worth it? I'm not looking for a super-overclock, but would like to get as much as I can out of my system at a reasonable price point.

edit: Meant to say I'm interested in the shim from a cooling standpoint. I've had no problems mounting heatsinks on durons before and getting good results. I just wonder if the extra contact area actually does any good for cooling (Inflow direct says it provides better heat transfer).

Kizmit,

PEP66 outperforms the PAL by a little bit. Whether or not it fits your mb/case is another question(you an always mod it).

RagmanX,

Are you getting the copper-shim for "cooling"(something it doesn't do) or to ensure flat heatsink mounting?
