I got my hubby a TV for Xmas and want to get a surround sound system to go with it.
our living room isn't huge but I'd like a quality system that would also serve us well if we move to a bigger place.

new tv

just go to BB or something and listen to them, then decide which you like best with the cost

I personally like the samsung 800w HTIB (cant remember the model # and dont want to check) I dont own it yet, but it looks nice and only $250 iirc

I researched this purchase carefully and think I made a great choice.I think it's the best in it's price range.

Budget for surround ? I'd say $500 or under

I use one for my HT and I love it. Tons of bass, small, and has every input you could need. OH not to mention would smack the Onkyo like a red headed step child as far as sound quality too 😱

Here is a review and the newer set out no longer have attached speaker wires. I have mine in a room that is 18x50 feet. The bass can be heard across the street when watching a movie 😀

No, no, no, no, no NO! Do not get a set of computer speakers and use them for a home theater system. And frankly I think you are quite delusional if you think that the sound quality on the Logitechs are better than the Onkyo funboy.

Geekbabe, I would go with what the other posters have suggested and get the Onkyo HTIB system as it's a pretty darn good system for the money. Plus you can upgrade the speakers down the road if you so choose.

I suspect the Onkyo has much better midrange and music reproduction than the Logitech, since the Logitech has tiny single drivers in the front speakers vs. 2 midrange + tweeter for the Onkyo.

Yeah thats why they are THX certified for sounding like crap and not reproducing the sounds correctly to obtain the certification 😛

THX certification means NOTHING, literally it means nothing. You can actually pay for the permission to use the THX logo without going through the testing at all. Heck why do you think so many high end manufacturers of audio equipment such as Harman Kardon, Carver, Renegade, Sunfire Audio and more don't even bother with it? There is no way that the Logitech speakers give good mid range sound reproduction since they are single cone drivers only. You can keep believing that your Logitech provides good sound quality while I listen to my system with my Harman Kardon receiver, Paradigm subwoofer and decent speakers that blows yours out of the water.

THX cert doesn't mean a whole lot. ESPECIALLY when comparing completely different systems in completely different (intended) environments.

Not true. Bose has tried to get the certification numerous times and has failed to reproduce the sounds correctly. And if what you say is true then why does a THX certified recever's cost so much more then one that is not? Because it has passed the test and your buying something that reproduces everything they way it is supposed to.
Your also missing the main point that she want something small, and cheap that sounds good and these will. And these do sound better. I have had JVC, Several sony high end, Pioneer, Panasonic, and yes even Onkyo and Harmon Kardon and the Logitech not only sounds better then any of them with decent speakers but costs much less then any I have put together. Were talking a $500 sub systems here. The 188 watt 10" bass will produce more then that crappy one that comes with the HTIB, so much so I have cracked a window in my kitchen and knocked stuff off the walls. So if you can tell me that the Onkyo HTIB can do all of that please LMK 😛

I am sure there are systems out there that may sound better if you want to pay out the nose for them but were taking keeping it under $500 and there is nothing out there for the price that can hold a candle to these. And yes they are labled as computer speakers but read some of the reviews on them. Most mention these also rival most HT systems out and its is because of that I chose to use one strictly for that. Not to mention when we watch a movie with friends they are astonished what they are hearing, feeling in thier chests, watching stuff fall of my shelves and wall that cost less then $250.

THX certifcation for these or anything else is just that. It is for one application. In order to get it it has to reproduce the sounds correctly. Be it a hometheater set up or computer speakers. In oreder to get it each have to pass the tests in the same way 😛

Till you hear one set up in a HT enviroment you really have no say in this to say what is better or not. Have have had High end HT systems and now this and to be honest I would take this. Not only just because it is cheaper but because it sounds better then anything i have put together. Come on over and have a listen and then you will change your mind 😛

I'm sure if you're going for something that gives off a lot of bass then the Logitech works fine. However if you want a good all around sound experience then the Logitech is not going to cut it with lack of midrange. I've listened to them myself and while they are decent they do not compare to a system that does have good midrange. And frankly I don't believe you when you say you've owned all of those other systems. Otherwise you would have upgraded them or still have one of them. Insofar as size the Onkyo system really does not take up that much space. The speakers are similar sized and the receiver can be placed somewhere in the room I'm sure.

I have owned them all but had to sell them all because of un-seen finace troubles.
Besides that I change my electronics more often then my underwear.

Just because one system has the THX label on it, doesn't mean it's superior to every system that doesn't have the label.

I never said that. But I am saying that is sounds better then the Onkyo in question. Geeze people were talking Sub $500 here. YES there are alot of other systems out there and I agree with you on that but The logitech against the Low end Onkyo in a box the logitechs will smoke thoes.
