Need advice on a replacement motherboard

A friend of mine has an older computer that the motherboard appears to have bit the dust. when you power up the system, the lights and everything appear to be running and getting power but it will not post. No beeps, nothing..

So I am assuming the motherboard is toast. If anyone has any ideas on things to test, I will gladly try them. I have done the standard resetting of the CMOS but that did nothing.

My question is what would be a decent (read affordable.. this person is not a big gamer and the machine is not that great anymore anyway) replacement motherboard. It will need to support the following:

AMD athlon 64 3200 socket 939
BFG 6800 GT PCI-e
pata hard drive
pata DVD drive
corsair value selct VS512MB400 (2 dimms)

Thank you in advance for any replies.

I would check newegg for a server board with 939 support. They had an asus for $80 that might work for you. Most 939 boards are sold out; you might find one used on ebay. Lots of folks have extra used 939 boards including me. I bought it when they were still available.

I have noticed that Newegg does not even have a filter for socket 939 boards anymore. It is just AM2 boards.

But what I am really not sure of is that when you look at an AM2 board it says it supports "Athlon 64" chips. Is this true??? I would not think that the AM2 socket and 939 socket are compatible. (I have not built a PC for a couple of years so I am not up to speed on the new chips and sockets)

An example is this board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813128052

it is an AM2 board that says it supports Athon 64 chips.

Thanks,

AM2 is a different socket from 939 and they are not compatible.

Almost no-one sells new 939 motherboards any more, I doubt any of the manufacturers are even making them now (socket 939 chips have not been produced in quite some time now so demand is decreasing).

Best bet is a used one on eBay or take this opportunity to upgrade the system to newer gear (your friend will thank you after the performance increase).

Going with a new motherboard/cpu from Intel/AMD will also require you to replace your memory (DDR2 is the standard now).

Gigabyte P35-DS3L $90
e2180 (2.0GHz, 1MB cache) $78
Corsair 2x1GB DDR2 $28 after MIR

Buy motherboard and cpu at ClubIT and use coupon code WEB4171938263 to save $5 off the combined price. Total cost after rebates: $191. One possibility: install your motherboard & cpu into his box and upgrade your gear to this setup.

Overclock to around 3GHz and it will smoke your overclocked X2 rig.

Thanks Denithor for the reply. I had a feeling that 939 will not work on AM2 socket motherboards. Makes ya wonder why they put athlon 64 as a supported chip.

I have been debating upgrading my system, so maybe I will try and sell him my system. 😀

Thanks again...
