Hey All,

Not sure if this is the right place, but I just wanted to get some advice on which new monitor to get. I have read several threads and reviews on the matter, however... I am still lost.

I do not have a specific model in mind, though I'm torn which of these features I should get:

1. 2560x1440, 144hz;
2. 2560x1440, IPS; or
3. 1920x1080, gsync, 144hz.

I will use it mainly for gaming, and watching movies. The games I play are mostly RPGs (e.g. The Witcher 3, Fallout 4). I play FPS games for the campaign, instead of online competitive matches.

My system consists of an Intel i7 4790k, 2-way sli Zotac GTX 970 (not OCed), and 16GB DDR3 RAM.

I live in the Philippines, so my choices are limited. Moreover, real discounts are basically non-existent here, and thus, the prices remain quite high.

The models available here which have the above features are:

1. BenQ 27 (XL2730Z) LED, 2560x1440, 144hz, vesa (PhP29,450.00);
2. Asus 27 inches PB278QR 2560 x 1440 WQHD IPS (PhP25,400.00); or
3. BenQ 24 (XL2420G) LED, Gsync, 144hz, vesa (PhP28,440.00).

Here are the links to the store items:

I am open to other suggestions as well.

Budget-wise, I was hoping to spend a maximum of PhP30,000.00 (roughly around USD650-700). Of course, the cheaper, the better.

Any advice on the matter will greatly be appreciated. Thank you!

If you don't play "competitive" eg. online vs. other players the advanatge of 120 hz is IMHO not really that important. If you are OK with lower fps, then you can go with higher resolution and better panel. Meaning given your usage description I would choose 2560x1440, IPS. 120 fps will be difficult to reach anyway on 2560x1440 in modern games.

Maybe someone who has actually played The Witcher 3, Fallout 4 should comment as well but I think but IMHO IPS is the best choice here also because of watching movies.

Note: Personally I just recently bought a 1080p 144hz display with blur reduction. I use it for playing first person shooter online. So here higher hz + blur reduction helps more than higher resolution and IPS. I also don't watch movies on it and 2560x1440, 144hz just needs way, way to much CPU and GPU performance to actually benefit greatly from 144 hz.

Thank you for the advice, everyone! I ended up getting a 2560x1440 IPS monitor (Dell U2715H) due to budgetary constraints. The G-Sync feature really adds a premium here, especially for 1440p monitors that are IPS and/or 144hz.

Still, the visual leap from my old 1080p TN monitor to my new 1440p IPS monitor is huge. Both The Witcher 3 and Fallout 4 look really beautiful. I hardly notice any "ghosting" during action scenes.

I might just eventually get a cheap 144hz 1080p monitor for FPS games, as advised above.

Again, thank you so much for all the advice and information!
