My dad needs a laptop for his business. His main use will be for directions and customer database. He brought home a laptop the other day and asked me to take a look at it because hes planning on purchasing it for 400$.

Heres what the laptop consists of...

heres a pic
Toshiba Satellite
Intel Celeron ( I have yet to figure out what speed this thing is, also dont know what model# this is sticker has been ripped off =x)
5.5GB
64mb pc100?
24x cdrom
12" screen ( i think )
floppy
56k
sound
2 pcmcia slots, 1 usb, video output, and ps2

I havent messed around with it much but when its on.. it makes a humming noise... im assuming thats the cpu fan.. hd also makes quite a bit of noise.. runs a little slow but other than that everything seems to be okay.

What do you think? spend a little more and get something a little better? or will this suit my dad? ask for a better offer than 400$?
thanks for your help guys and gals

Problem:

HD too small
Too little RAM
Screen may not be active-matrix (poor color and response time)

Oh yeah, and I think this would be worth $300 or so.

I would spend $100-200 more and get something MUCH better.

check out HD. for a few hundred more. you can get a much nicer laptop. i think the toshiba s123 is in the $600-$700 range at staples.

actually, $550 from this hot deals thread. though most likely, it'll be OOS in your area. worth a look see though.

Like the others have indicated, $300 more will get your father a new laptop with better features - and a warranty. The newer laptop will carry your father many more years. If he purchases the listed laptop, it will be quite dated - it's nearly at the end of its useful life-cycle right now.
