I finished the build and when I connected my XFX Core Edition Pro 650W PSU (which was recommended), unfortunately it was DOA (which I know could happen to a PSU from any brand - but now I wish I had stuck with Corsair).

I connected it to the motherboard via the 24 pin main connector and 8 pin supplemental connector. The small LED of the motherboard worked, but the system wouldn't do anything (no beeps, no fan twitches, nothing). Performed all of the standard trouble shooting recommended online, which took ~2 hours (checking switches, checking outlets, re-seating power cables, removing hardware to eliminate other problems, bypassing power switch, etc.) but had no luck. I then tried a different PSU from my current computer and then the new build started up fine. Just for good measure I tried the defective XFX PSU on my current computer (which obviously normally works) and got the same symptoms as the new machine - nothing.

Unfortunately the shipping back to Newegg for RMA is ~$16 through UPS using their website. Does anyone know if I am better off trying to go through XFX for their warranty (or will I still have to pay for shipping back to them)? Overall it is pretty disappointing :-( but at least the motherboard seems fine (which at first I was worried was the culprit). The other option is swallowing the $16 return shipping and buying a different brand (Corsair). Anyone with experience of what is the best route?

Thanks,
Daniel

You said it yourself in the first sentence. Any brand will have a DOA from time to time. New Corsair TX are Seasonics just like the XFX Core, hell they could even come off the same assembly line. I'd just return it to Newegg and get a replacement. They should be much quicker than XFX (or any manuf.).

mfenn,

Thanks for the feedback. I will try to get a replacement through Newegg.

I understand that the two brands could share an assembly line, and that that is the most likely point at which the failure occurred (during manufacturing). My point was that I know for some products (though perhaps not these PSUs), after it is branded for different companies various levels of quality control checking can occur. I am not sure if that is the case here, but if Corsair hand checked all of their units (for instance), then perhaps this unit would have been scrapped instead of packaged and sold. Also, the failure could potentially have occurred after the initial manufacturing process, I am not sure how the branding and boxing works after that point.

Thanks,
Daniel

My replacement PSU came on Friday. Everything is up and running, and the computer is awesome. I just started playing BF3 and it runs perfectly smooth on full ultra settings. Very satisfied :)

Thank you so much for all of the recommendations and help guys!
