For cpu
Should I go with P4 with Hyper Thread, Athlon64, or XP Barton?

I would do dual channel RAM

I need to buy the following items to complete the system?

cpu
heatsink/fan
motherboard
RAM
video card for gamer

$600-$750 for the above components, what could I get for the best result?

would 512MB RAM enough? should I get slower cpu and get a better video card or vice versa?

your input is highly appreciated.

those 3 million thread are out-dated. most thread talk about P4 cpu with 533FSB when doing comparison.

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.8C ($213.00)
Heatsink: Zalman CPS7000A-Cu Heatsink and Fan ($38.99)
Motherboard: Abit IC7 ($120.99)
RAM: 1GB Mushkin Dual Pack (512MBx2) PC3500 DDR RAM ($283.00)
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9600XT 128MB ($189.99)

Total: 845.97

A little over but it gives you something to work at, you could save 40 bucks and go for a 2.6C processor, and another $50 bucks by going with PC3200 RAM of a different flavor, but all in all, I would suggest this, or grab a Barton 2500+ and crank it to 3200+ effortlessly.

thanks for the input

any suggestions on non-overclocked system?

for non over-clocked system, I can save some money on buying the slower RAM and using retailed cpu fan.

well, buffalo pc3200 is still damn cheap. i would still get it cuz its hard to find quality pc2700 at that price. if you dont want to OC, i would look into a 2800+ and use the stock HSF to save $20

Take Shady's suggestion, and replace the 2500 with a 2800 or 3000. Still cheaper than the same Intel solution.($206 for the 400fsb XP3000 performs like the 2.8c)
