so i'd like to load up steam and play a little counter strike;source. I'm still new to my mac (and loving it) so if you could kindly show me the steps of what i need and perhaps a free software alternative I'd greatly appreciate it.

There's a trial, so give it a try and see if it will work for the games you want.

I haven't had much of any luck with Crossover/Wine. Personally, I would just use BootCamp and a native install of Windows.
 
wine is a good alternative if you really hate rebooting into windows for boot camp. i personally would use boot camp and get the maximum performance available.
