Need advice for simple receiver and speakers

My dad calls me up, he wants to replace his current crappy aiwa stereo in a box with something better.
they have a 36in SDTV, and a decent dvd player that can also do cd's ( i think)

My mom listens to the radio a lot while at home, so I need to have that.
I was thinking maybe a simple receiver and a pair of good speakers.

any suggestions?

At OneCall.com :

$249 Onkyo TXSR502 silver or black. Good for both stereo and 5.1 if they get the surround bug later.

$250 Boston Acoustics - CR67 Black (pr), free shipping
$257 Infinity ALPHA20BK
$133 JBL - E30 ("was $299")

At Crutchfield.com (higher prices but cheap shipping, excellent service, great return policy)

$268 Onkyo 502
$249 Polk RT4

thanks! I'm also looking at the onkyo 770 for about $425 from circuit city, I'll try to talk him into spending a little more though.

Hmm, the Onkyo 602 should be good enough for anyone without at least silver ears.

If you can talk him into spending more, be sure to get good speakers first -- the speakers will make much more of a difference in sound quality than the receiver in this budget range.

Agreed. Some great sounds come from the Polk RTi series of speakers - and the RTi4s are no exception. I have the RTi8s - and they are nicely made and sound great. The RTi4s also feature real wood veneer - in your choice of cherry or a dark oak finish.
