Need advice for replacement Core2Duo retail HS/FAN

Hi - I am a longtime Ananad website and forum reader, but had never joined the forums before.

I need advice on a replacement for the heatsink/fan that ships with retail Core2Duo CPU's.

I upgraded a PC for my father, and shipped it to him....during shipping the heatsink came lose....when it arrived my brother tried to re-attach it but is having trouble getting it to stay tight.

I have tried to get him to reset the heat sink posts by turning them 1/4 turn clockwise and then 1.4 turn counterclockwise with a screwdriver....but dont know if this has been successfull yet.

Prior to shipping the PC, which is an Asrock 775 Dual VSTA (my father didnt want to spend much $$$ and had just purchased 2 GB of DDR ram....) during testing - it would get up to 112-115 degrees F in a warm apartment while running SETI or Sisoft Sandra....after shipping, and having the heatsink problem, it is running 150 degrees before shutting off automatically.

So I may need to have him replace the heat sink/fan.

Could someone please recommend a good heat sink/fan for an E300 that will work in an Asrock 775 Dual VSTA mobo? One that is preferably not too loud and not too expensive, but one that could possibly handle some overclocking? Plus it shouldnt be overly difficult to install.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike

PS I know this is off topic in this forum - but this particular motherboard really surprised me. Everything worked great out of the box - easiest build I have ever done....which is surprising considering how it is kind of a hybrid design. Plus it is still fast. Overclocking options are poor but thats not what you would buy it for - you would buy it for circumstances like mine - you have an existing investment in older equipment or components, but you also want/need something faster now.

The stock intel heatsink will be fine for a non overclocked system. But if it has come off 🙁 it needs to be reinstalled properly wich should include cleaning the heat sink and processer with denatured alcohol and reaplying heat transfer compound like Arctic Silver 5. There are A lot of ways you can screw this up and if your brother is not confident that the Heatsink is properly installed you should find an expierence person to show him how.
I dont ever remember using or needing a screwdriver for this and one slip can be very espensive.

He probably meant screwdriver use for the clips, I had trouble due to the size of my hands to twist the pins properly with bare hands (on a Scythe Ninja BTW), so I used a flathead screwdriver to turn the pins. If you want a cheap HSF that installs easily (no removal of motherboard needed, no screws, baclplates to worry about which are necessary for some of the monstrous coolers out there), get the Freezer 7 Pro, push pin styly (like the stock HSF), is cheap and performs better than the stock too.

Edit: I suggest going to a professional installer for the heatsink installation since you're dealing with the most sensitive, expensive and fragile component here (CPU itself).

I aggree with the Freezer 7 Pro as I use one it is very efficent and quieter that the OE intel cooler. It is however probably overkill if you are not oc'ed. more important is good thermal paste and proper installation/contact.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I had my brother take it to a local computer store yesterday afternoon. So I talked to the guy at the store.....

And this was kind of worrisome - he wasnt familiar with the Intel stock HS/Fan design.

So I asked him what he did there - he said they used to build custom PC's but have moved to selling prebuilt Compaq/Hps the past few years.

The part about the screwdriver - according to the CPU instructions...when you want to remove the HS/fan, you are supposed to "reset" the posts by turning the post 1/4 turn counterclockwise, which will apparently release the post...then before re-attaching it, you need to "re-reset" by turning each post 1/4 turn clockwise. At least according to the instructions that came w/the CPU. So I was thinking that maybe that was why the HS was not re-attaching tightly for them.

I just wish I was there....

Anyway a dumb question - the Freezer 7 Pro sounds great.....can it be installed w/o taking the motherboard out of the case? i.e. does anything need to be screwed on from underneath?

I think I will talk to the guy in the morning and if he still hasnt solved the problem I will just order him a tube of Arctic Silver 5 and a Freezer 7 Pro and let him put that on.

Thanks, Mike

A computer store that can't even install a heatsink? That's pathetic. Getting the Freezer 7 Pro seems pointless, if the store can't even install a stock HS. I don't have one, but I'm fairly sure it installs about the same way, but it's bigger and heaver; he might hurt himself.

When you talk to the guy, tell him about this cool new thing called the internet. On this intenet he can find instructions, with pictures, they're even in color!

Yeah, I know.

Like I said, I wish I was there.....this isnt rocket science.

I insured the thing for $1000. Tomorrow I am going to goto Mailboxes ETC and start the process of collecting on that insurance. I paid extra for it.

As for the guy at the store - I honestly didnt know what to say when he said he wasnt familiar "with that design". Intel has been sending that design out with retail CPU's for at least a couple of years now....or at least as long as Socket 775 has been around as far as I know.

But it is there at the store- he claims to know how to do this. I will probably have my brother take it to another store...I agree this is absurd.

I just dont want to have to fly home to fix this stupid thing...its only a detached heatsink for Gods sake. Shipping these things w\insurance is expensive and as this shows can lead to damage regardless of how it is packed.

You can install the Freezer 7Pro with the Mobo in place you just have to be abit carefull as it will be tight ther is nothing on the back needed.

Ideally it should be done outside the case. Be very careful when trying it inside the case. As far as the employee at the store goes, at least he was honest about telling you what he knew. Some would tackle it anyway and mess it up in the process then try to get you to pay for their mistake.

Personally, I would thank the guy for his honesty and take it somewhere else with people more experienced. Obviously he hasnt built PCs in a while. The Conroes are new but if he's a proficient builder it wouldnt be hard for him to figure it out.

I talked to him on the phone a couple of times....he seemed like a nice guy. I suspect he will be able to figure it out....I talked to him today and he said the problem is the fan on the heatsink isnt working.....apparently he has the HS tight now.

So I ordered a Freezer7 Pro. It will be there tomorrow, he can put it on.....I will let you all know how the saga ends....thanks for your help!

Hi guys,

Just wanted to let you know that I ordered the Freezer 7 Pro - and the guy at the store was able to install it.

FYI apparently it is running alot cooler than it was before with the Intel HS. When I go home at Christmas and visit my family I will overclock it for my dad.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Mike
