I have an office where they have 8 computers, the server is w2k and the computers are mostly w98. I need to be able to backup the entire server (about 30gb), and also the workstations (from 2gb to 8gb on each one). They need to keep copies off-site, so I was thinking tape, but I have no clue what's good/available. I was hoping to keep hardware around $500, but that can be increased if necessary. Please, any ideas/thoughts/information is very welcome!

Tape drive. You need one drive, and a set of about five to six media for a reliable backup strategy. For low cost sturdy tape drives, I recommend Onstream's ADR series, available in 30, 50, 60 and 120 GByte sizes (assuming 2:1 data compression). I've used them a few times, and I own one myself. Good reliable stuff; and the larger ones come with fine software too.
