Thanks for the info guys. By the way, I'm looking to reside in Plano due to the 99 ranch market proximity.

I prefer Asia World Market, which is right by it, produce seems fresher there. There's also an H-mart (Korean) in Carrollton that's pretty good.

The bakery in 99 Ranch is pretty awesome though and 99 Ranch seems to have more things made in house (dumplings and such) than Asia World Market. H-Mart is awesome, I thought I heard they were opening another one further east somewhere.

Not Asian but Central Market in Plano also has good (but typically overpriced) produce. And if you like it apparently Trade Joe's is coming near Preston and Park.

If you like Asian foods and fresh produces, then visit those Asian markets (not in any particular order):

Hong Kong (Walnut and Audelia)

Saigon (Jupiter and Belt Line)

Truong Nguyen (Walnut and Jupiter -west side)

Hiep Thai (Walnut and Jupiter - east side)

Those are relatively far if he plans to reside in Plano. My parents used to go to Hong Kong all the time until their produce quality started going down.

If you're into banh mi, there's a shop around Hiep Thai that makes some kickass ones. Buy 5 get 1 free. Too bad Lee's Sandwiches just closed in Saigon.

99 Ranch has a great bakery. Other than that it's a tossup along with Asia World, just go to whichever has a better price. For restaurants along the Asia World strip, skip Umeko (overpriced IMO), do go to Que Huong for pho, and do go to the Sichuan place. There's also Shui Wah, but my parents know the owner and think she's kind of letting it get a bit stale. Food there is pretty oily and the service is slow.

On the 99 Ranch side, there's a restaurant called Mian Cuisine, serving Taiwanese (I think) cuisine, but they've changed owners at least twice already so I have no clue what the food quality is like now

Dallas is full of fatties :(

Obviously, he shouldn't go to those grocery stores daily but weekly/biweekly would be fine.

Good banh mi is at Ba Le sandwitches, across the street from Truong Nguyen, buy 5 get 1 free too.

There is a large banh bi shop at the end of Saigon market (can't remember the name), at the foodcourt. It was decent but too "westernized" IMO.

I like Pho places such as Pastuer in Carollton and Pho Bang in Garland. Not into Chinese foods because too oily for my taste.

I still think they're too far (West Plano, right by Frisco), but that's just me. Not that into Vietnamese anyway besides the banh mi.

I'm pretty sure you were talking about Lee's Sandwiches, which was indeed pretty Westernized. They closed that location down though per my mom.

Never been to Garland and rarely to Carrollton, there are just too many other options to choose from that are closer for me.

Basically, OP, you have plenty of places to explore once you get here. Bring a cowboy hat and boots and your biggest keg.

Dallas is like what OC was 20 years ago. Still a ways to go but as others have noted, the Asian population has exploded and you can pretty much find what you want in Dallas. As long as you stick to Plano you are gravy.

However, be prepared to fight the battle of corporate racism and the southern good ole boys club.

If you're ambitious and couldn't find anything better than LA, then it's worth the move to get the promotion.

You do that for two years and move back to Cali with another company and promotion.

That's how people play the "game" to move up the ranks. I've seen it and experienced time and again from my Ivy b-school colleagues.

TWO
years max and then it's on to the next gig. If you have skills, then you shouldn't be afraid of jumping (takes about 3 good months of job search while you're working).

if you don't have that throw away the jacket type ambition and are fine with your pay and friendships, then a 15% spike won't cut it...especially AFTER TAXES! If you have no friends/family and no life aside of work (and never leave the apartment) and not against seeing new places, then a "why not?" play is in order. If you're a beach hound, then Dallas is definitely a no-go!

Dallas is about as good as it gets in the "South" when it comes to cultural "diversity". UT has definitely influenced the Texas culture. Many bands, food, etc. If you're social, it shouldn't be a problem. You shouldn't have problems hooking up in the community which is seriously comprised of Indians and Asians in a sea of cowboys and progressive minded UT educated hicks.

I suggest you travel there and stay a PTO week to get a taste of things...otherwise you'd be doing yourself a disservice with such a big jump.

If it were me and I'm comfortable in my zone, a 30%+ pay spike would be necessary. No way I'm uprooting myself for lower pay spike. I'd continue looking...especially in N. Cali for that next job promo. I'd be able to stay in Cali and it still be win/win over Texass, which is an acquired taste for more unadventurous, high brow, closed-minded Californians....
