October, November and December are generally considered as the worst time up upgrade your GPU since New GPU's will be released shortly in new year, that said if you can really wait for 4 ~ 6 months ( i know they going to release them in Q1 but it generally takes 6 months before they become actually available in the market) then please do, its really not the time to upgrade.

but if you cannot wait for 6 months for the New GPU Gen then please do upgrade. I myself have purchased a GTX 1080 Ti like 3 days back cause i have no GPU and my vacations starts from January and i really dont want to waste my vacation.

Well, I went to MC and got GeForce GTX 1080 Ti STRIX ROG Overclocked 11GB GDDR5X GAMING. Even with tax, the price was cheaper than most online.

It is a beast. I had to run furmark to get to 55C degrees to get the fans going.

It is beyond amazing.

Thanks to all who provided their helpful suggestions.

1080TI is great card. One of the best i had and i had alot of cards since 1999 and TNT2 ;).Only downside is bad oc like all pascal cards. Its not like 980TI with 30% oc headroom.Next new cards will be again milking mid-range GTX2080/2070 with insane price anyway. Not worth buying those small SKUs.

I have got to tell you that the price seems insane for a GPU. Yes, I paid only $200 less for R9 290 three years ago. Selling old GPU and yearly bonus did help here.

Now, when I see how smooth everything is on 4K monitor all of the financial worries are irrelevant.

This upgrade has been pure pleasure. I have got to tell you that things have changed since 386SX times. LOL. I wish I had a list of all my upgrades.

Matrox G200 - G400, ATI Sapphire GTO^2, GeForce 7900, ATI 5850, R9 R290, GeForce1080Ti
and a few I must have forgotten.

Now, I strongly feel that VR will be next for me.

Thanks for letting us know guskline that Oculus Rifts works well for you.

What are you doing /playing? I'm keen but can't see any worthy content on Oculus rift ( Fallout excepted) but I want to want it. 1080ti is even more compelling than 980TI congratulations and happy gaming.

One of the few great games on VR is the Startrek VR game, don't know the exact name, but you can't miss it.

I’m actually using my third rig (6700k and GTX980TI) as my VR rig. Have 16G DDR4-3200 using Asus Z170 Hero mb with cpu OC’d to 4.6.
Right now it is custom watercooled with a MO-RA3-420rad .

I won a Caselabs BH8 in a contest so I’m converting it back to a EVGA 280mm AIO cpu cooler and putting the air cooler back on the EVGA GTX 980 TI SC.

It will be light and portable for VR!

I highly recommend Elite Dangerous for VR, but it is a very difficult and time consuming title.

However, it is the best looking space game for VR imo.

Get the 1080ti. Its the best card available and can be purchased at MSRP. Vega is absolute garbage compared because it's in most cases more expensive with much less performance but, with higher energy usage. The next-gen Nvidia cards will most likely be severely hobbled as they have zero competition from AMD.

Right now i'd snag a deal on a 1070 or 1070ti. (get one for 400$ or less) that will hold you over until volta, and you can resell w/out losing massively on it. It will still be leaps and bounds ahead of the r9 290.

Good luck getting either of those cards for $400 or less.
