Need advice: Automatic Recovery in XP?

Automatic Recovery in XP, what is it actually doing? I got a floppy and the system back-up file on the HDD. But how does it work? Obviously the system files are restored. But what happens to the other files? Is soemthing overwritten or are they kept untouched? And what is the difference to a full back-up of the complete system?
