Need advice aboot Christmas

Ok so I bought all my family presents and my ATOT secret santa person got it as well. My problem is my best friend has a son which will end up calling me uncle (I'm there alot and love the little guy). They wanted something for him (2 years old) and can't really afford it. They get paid the same day as I do(December 22), should I just buy the item or check with them first as they wont wake up till 6 and the stores are only open till 8 or 10.

Yeah I was going to tell him in advance, but I wont see him till the 22nd.

Give him a call? Just say "Hey I know the little guy really wants this, so I thought I'd get one for him." You don't have to bring up anything about their financial situation, just say you'd like to get it for him.

I was there when the fight between them went down.

EDIT: It wasn't pretty. Also the kid already has lots of toys for Christmas.
 
I wanted to keep it a secret that I'd buy it but I guess that was impossible. So I called them and made sure they wouldn't buy it.

EDIT: They had enough money to buy it but they would have taken a hit to there finances. I wont so its agreed now that I'm getting him one. (A PS2/Xbox/GC/ for kids thingy)
