Question Need Advice - 140m Ethernet Run Between Buildings

Hey community,

I'm facing a technical challenge and could really use your expertise. I need to establish a wired network connection between two points 140 meters apart - well beyond the standard 100m limit for Ethernet.

Key Details:

• Outdoor installation (connecting two separate buildings)
• Requires stable, reliable bandwidth
• Must be wired (WiFi isn't suitable for this application)

Looking for real-world experience:

1. Has anyone successfully implemented a similar long-distance run?
2. What solutions actually worked in practice?
3. Any pitfalls or lessons learned I should know about?

I'm especially interested in hearing about what's worked (or failed) for others in field deployments.

This is really pretty simple. Use multi mode fiber with a converter at each end.

Yeah, this isnt a job for ethernet, but for fiber. It will be expensive, mainly the conduit that you will need to run to protect the fiber. You will also need compatible switches with SFP28, SFP+, QSFP28, or QSFP+ ports on both the main location and the remote building.

No need for expensive switches unless you have specific needs. Something like this will do the trick for gigabit. Then just use any gigabit switch at each end.

140 Meters is 460 ft. Cable Etherent is usaully suppose to be 300 Feet Max.

I have a 200 Feet installation and ir works very well.

460 ft probably will work, but it will Not be max speed, or might very low speed

Thus Fiber it is expensive solution but a Good One.

Depending on the environment if you have a power source in a safe place in the middle of the way install a good switch there, plug one wire from the source to switch, and a second wire from it to the destination. It probably will work well and be less expensive, but much less durable.

I'm going to give that distance a try at my new house. Kinda.
It is about 550' from house to gate. I can drop a POE powered switch at 50' out in a vault, and then make a go for it. I don't need much out there in the way of bandwidth. 100Mbit would be plenty for a camera and some gate control.
If it does not make, no loss. I have 7 partial boxes of cat5e and cat6 leftover from my networking days. I can drag in some multimode and go that route.
The gate end of it will have solar panels and a battery.
