He has a 2ghz amd athlong with 1gb of ddr2 ram and a 8400GS. I'm looking for a game that will run pretty well on his computer. He plays all types but I want to get him an FPS with good single player and multiplayer modes. Any suggestions? Price range is around 20 bucks. An RTS wouldn't be too bad either.

Starcraft.

do you troll every post?

It's not a troll. It's a classic that will run great on that hardware!

he's kinda right.

Warhammer 40K + its expansions is good.

People are also loving that Universe at War game, and Company of Heroes

if he doesn't have the orange box, that wouldn't be a bad choice, IMO.

i just finished episode 2 and my god, it was 1000x HL2 and EP1.

Yeah, I thought about that. But it's way over the budget we all agreed on for presents.

We all know its better to recieve than to give. So if you already own half life 2 and episode 1, go by yourself the orange box and "gift" half life 2 and episode 1 to your friend since they come free with the orange box anyways.

Far Cry?

Can be bought new for $20 and his computer meets the specs (although he will need to turn down the graphics settings a bit). That solves the single-player need. Not sure what kind of a MP following the game has.

Also consider Call of Duty.

Hmm, well I picked up Battlefield 2 for $9.99 at Best Buy. The only thing I'm afraid of is that the on-line community is dead. But I kind of doubt that.

That was a pretty good idea with BF2. Note the singleplayer is not really worth playing at all, but great fun can be had online.

Although it was very frustrating for me when I started. Even as a FPS veteran I just got owned. Finally started learning it more, that and buying the SF expansion so I could unlock the damn FN2000 and G36E certainly helped too! :) I still never got any good with vehicles or aircraft (overpowered) and grenade spamming and other crap is very annoying. But for me, I just liked the infantry combat. So just let your friend know to be patient, and stick to urban maps and smaller games if he is getting killed constantly.

BTW, the community is hardly dead. Gamespy says over 15,000 players currently playing. It's been at #3 or #4 for quite a long time.

Ok, he already has the gift, but if anyone is looking here's a few I would recommend that are under $20 at Amazon. Rome Total War Gold Edition, Sam & Max Season 1, GTR 2 Game of the Year Edition, SWAT 4 Gold, The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, Unreal Anthology, Brothers in Arms, and Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. Not quite as good but worth considering are Serious Sam 2, or Quake 4.

Can't beat the price! I felt like getting an FPS with a more compelling story line. But I figure with him playing a lot of Hitman, an involving single player is already taken care of. Hopefully he doesn't get tired of blowing up things.

Agreed, knowing him, I see A LOT of frustration in his future. hahaha
