Need a Wireless Access Point

I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless router. I need to put a access point on the other side of the house. Do I have to go with a Linksys WAP54G or can I go with another brand? Also, I was looking at the Buffalo Technology AirStation 54Mbps Wireless Compact Repeater/Bridge-g, 802.11g at CompUSA and was wondering if that would work where I need a access point.

Let me ask this a different way. If I put a WAP on the other side of the house(yes, I have ethernet over there already), how does the laptop switch between the WAP and the Wireless Router to have the best strength? Is this a manual process to select one over the other or does it figure it out automatically?

supposedly whenever your computer roam, it will accociate it self with the nearest AP. But this normally applies only to an enterprise product such as cisco aironet. What you can do though, disable your wireless card on your laptop, and re enable them and they will associate it self with the nearest (stronger signal) Access points.

I have a D-Link DWL-650+ and it has a "Site Survey" function that shows all the access point/routers and the corresponding signal strength. You can save a configuration for each access point. All you have to do is pick which one you want to use. It defaults to the last one you selected. So the answer is: For a D-link it is a manual (but very easy) process.
