What should I watch out for if I'm buying a used one from craigslist or similar ilk?

A bad ESN. Typically this will result from someone not paying there bill but also if they have reported it lost or stolen and gotten an insurance replacement.

How do you check that the ESN is good or not?

what kind are you looking for? I have a few older ones laying around (newest is a Moto RAZR). Not doing me any good here.

but, on topic, what everyone else said. Make sure the ESN comes up clean.

Something cheap for my verizon contract. I left my EnV in my pants pocket a few months ago and my wife washed it.

I believe Verizon only cares about stolen phones, I have helped a lot of people sell old Verizon phones. A bunch of them had been disconnected for not paying the bill and none came up with a bad ESN when we checked them.

You can usually go get a new subsidized phone if you extend your contract. Most places are pretty good at that.

I just sold the last of my Verizon phones, typically I just put them on CL when I upgrade. FS/T or Howard Forums is a good place to look for a cheap used ones and with heatware and such it is a pretty safe bet, more so then Ebay.
