I am preparing to build a new system with the following in it:

Soyo Dragon+ MB
Athlon xp 1700
lite-on 24x10x40
Geforce2 ti200
60GB hard drive--not sure on the brand... what's the best?
2 sticks of 256mb 2100 ddr ram from crucial
generic floppy
possibly 250 zip drive
possibly 12x cd drive

I was needing a good case/ps. I think most of the stuff I'm buying will be purchased from newegg.com, only because it's good prices w/ a good rating. I would like to buy the case/ps in a package, I think it almost seems cheaper that way. Do most atx ps's fit in most atx cases? I might be getting a atx case that came from gateway(someone is giving it to me), but I'm sure the power supply isn't going to be good enough. Would I be better off just using that case and then buying the ps?

I'm open to any suggestions about the system in general, or the cases/ps. I will greatly appreciate any help, as this is my first attempt to build a computer from scratch.

If you can, please provide links to the products that you think have a nice price tag on them!

Thanks!
-Doug :D

I recently bought an Antec case, the SX635. It has a pretty nice design, although a removable mobo tray would be nice. Your setup sounds similar to mine, with two CDROMs and a Zip, all of which would fit in this case. The smartcard reader that comes with the Soyo also fit well. I read some good reviews about this case, which was the reason I bought it. The price may be a little high for your tastes, but it's a good investment, IMHO. As for the hard drive, I've heard good things about Seagate Barracuda IV's, mostly from this site. Just bought two 40's and am waiting for them to arrive. :D

Go with the Antec 1030 full tower and it comes with the Antec 300W or Antec 350W psu.

Thanks for the suggestions! The SX635 is 99 bucks plus 20 for shipping. That is at the absolute high of my price range :) About the Baracuda IV's... where did you order them from? That sounds like something that I may like to get too! Are you planning on using Raid w/ your two drives?

Thanks alot guys! Any other suggestions out there? I need all the help I can get!

I'll look for the Antec 1030 later, I have to go right now!

Thanks again!

I think you're gonna need to get more than just 300W PS. Might want to consider getting an Antec 1040, which has a 400W PS. It costs more than you might want to pay for, but it would be the only tower case you'll ever need for a long, long, LONG time ;-)

Thanks for the suggestions!

So you think 400 is probably necessary? If I just got the psu w/o the case, would I save a lot of money?

Yeah, the 1040's are a little expensive... but if I need it, I guess I need it. Like I said, I'm a newbie at building computers. I've worked on them, but never built them from scratch. This is my first attempt.

Any other suggestions out there?

Thanks,
-Doug

I'll be using RAID 0 on the Soyo mobo with the Seagates. I got them from a site called Unity Electronics, or something, but that's just because newegg was out of stock. :(

I thought you couldn't use the Barracuda IV's in RAID because of them being too fast or something?
