Need a sound card for home theater

Hi guys, I need a sound card for my HTPC. I need the digital out to connect to my Yamaha 750 AV receiver. I don't care the quality of analog out and I don't play game.

Just want a sound card with decent digital out with a good price. It doesn't matter the digital out is optical or coxial.

Thanks!

Get the Audigy 2 ZS. I didn't get the platinum one and I bought the one without the front box thing. It was only 95 dollars I think. It was a great deal.

Has good sound, I think.

I have a yamaha reciever too but I don't have it hooked to it hehe I do have the Klipsch Ultra 5.1's though

Does that have digital out?

I still would like to hear Music on one of these vs. my A2. I bought the A2 because of gaming. Maybe I could install a chaintek also 😛

then switch the plugs hahaha

M-audio rev 7.1

I have it hooked up to a Denon AVR-5805 and 7 pairs of Dayton Shield BR-1s. It's a worthy card.

For digital out only, the card barely matters. Get the cheapest card you can find from a known brand. Creative and Turtle Beach both have sub $30 cards that will work just as well as a $200 card for your tasks.

I'm using the Chaintech AV710 with my mini-disc system via optical out. It's the cheapest of the Envy24HT-S clones. Not a very good gaming card compared to the Fortissimo III that it replaced, but if all you care about is a decent music card with optical out, it should serve you well.

I currently using a audigy2 ZS platinum, but I want to replace it with a cheaper one. BTW, I don't like the SRC process in the creative sound cards.

Summary from the article:

"I decided to get an Envy24HT card. Which one should I get?

As shown by my reviews above, the only Envy24HT card I will recommend is the Audiotrak Prodigy 7.1. It is just an excellent card. The Revolution and Aureon are also good cards on the hardware level, but their drivers and support suck.

I decided to get an Envy24HT-S card. Which one should I get?

There are two good cards for this catagory. The Chaintech AV-710 is excellent if you only need SPDIF output (that's why I own one ). The Maddog Entertainer 7.1 is the other good choice if you need the option for SPDIF input as well. The price difference is $5-30 depending on the day, and what rebates CompUSSR has for the Maddog at the momment. The Gainward version is garbage, and the Turtle Beach card does not have enough information available yet to form any other opinion than "It's over-priced!"

EDIT: This is from 2/10/05 so some things have changed, but the best budget card is still the Chaintech. For higher end, I would get a revolution.

Why gainward version is garbage? they use the same PCB layout and the driver is the same. Haven't finished that thread yet....

I think the general info on the via envy chips is more usefull than the product recommendations. At over a year old, I'd take anything he says about driver support with a grain of salt, but the features of the cards will still be the same.

At $25 including a cheap optical cable, you really can't beat the chaintech card.

I decide to buy an AV710 and flash it to prodigy 7.1.

Thank you guys all! You really helps me. Especially YOyoYOhowsDAjello!!!
