google talk is by far the best if everyone has android.

or google+ messenger if you want to be able to send pictures / group chat easily.

I agree. I also enjoy using google talk. My fiance refuses to pay extra on his monthly phone bill on text messaging. As a result we just message via google talk. It's free! It's great.
