need a SHORT hsf

I'm putting a 900Mhz Duron in a case that has the PSU right above the CPU socket, so I need a HSF that's under 3" tall. Any recommendations? I'm looking to be able to overclock this thing to about 1.1Ghz too.

There are quite a few heatsinks under 3" tall. I think the sk-6 with delta fan is under 3". I had my Duron 750 at 1.1 for a while with my sk-6. If your Duron 900 has an ANCA core, 1.1 GHz should be easy to reach.

The SK6 only gives me about half an inch of clearance between HSF and PSU though, is there anything smaller?

<< find a different case 😉

how bout the svc goldengate? isn't that a big shorter than the sk-6?

This case is gonna look kickass when im done with it 😀 Pics to come...

Where can I find the goldengate for sale? Also, how's the Swiftech MCX-370? It's about the right height I think.

the swiftech is way too big for that. with the 60mm papst i have the height is like 4.5". even if you could get it to fit, you wouldn't have any airflow.

Try this:
HP ArctiCooler
I own one but I haven't actually tried it in my case. It's not even two inches tall. Here's a review:

The one at allelectronics will fit athlon motherboards have the screw holes around the processor. No prob with newer board.

I'm using a Palo Alto PA-450 on a couple of systems in my house, and it has ~60mm clearance for a HS/F total. I am using the stock HS/F from an Athlon XP 1600+ in one system (Athlon 850 CPU) and it works quite well. I am using an Alpha PAL6035 with a 15mm Adda fan in the other, and it works pretty well (Athlon 1200/266 CPU, which runs pretty hot). Now, the one thing that has to be mentioned is that I am using the stock AGI 250w power supply that comes with this case, and that PS is ventilated on both the back and the bottom, so the PS fan (replaced with a Panaflo L1A) helps to exhaust excess heat from the CPU, something that wouldn't happen with a PS with a non-ventilated bottom. You could also use an Enermax dual fan PS to do the same thing, though it would be louder.

What about the Alpha PEP? The fan is on the side, so even if it the PSU is close, it doesn't matter, since air will be pulled through the side.

From what I can gather, the Alpha PAL8045 is only about 45.5 mm (1.79 in) tall.. and the 80mm delta on top of that is about 25.4 mm (1 in).. together that's 2.79 in, which is close to but still under 3 in.

The SK6 according to newegg is 63.2 mm tall, which is 2.48819 in. That's kinda tall for what you're doing.. with a 60 mm fan (about 1 in tall) that's way over 1 in.

I've got the same problem you do actually.. only I'm dealing with an Athlon 1.33 Ghz, instead of a Duron. In both of our cases, it's probably better just to buy a new case. Unfortunately, a lot of the nice cases are expensive, though I think I may have found an Antec that is pretty decent for the price.

The 8045 is too big, I have one on my main machine, I think I might have to go with one of the server coolers in Anand's article, only problem is I can't find anywhere to buy any of them! Anybody know?

Duffy: The case is a generic midtower that's a few inches shorter than a normal midtower, so the PSU is located right next to the CPU socket.

I think I'm just going to buy that Antec SX830 case.. my current one is just a crapper (I think it's the INWIN midtower, the S500/300 or something like that). I can't deal with the fact that the PSU is right next to the CPU. Even with a blowhole (with 80 mm fan) right above my processor, it's still unbelievably hot. I'm pretty sure it's the HSF, but I can't do anything about it.. not with that PSU sitting there. 🙁 So I'm moving up to that Antec I think.. 2 80mm intake, 2 80mm exhaust, 1 80mm for drive bay.. that's what I've been waiting for all my life! 😛

The Alpha PAL153U looked nice, but how well could that thing cool down an Athlon 1.33 with poor case ventilation? Somehow I don't think it would be able to do the trick.

I dunno about that w0rm, it did pretty well in Anand's enclosed space test, my well ventilated cramped midtower can probably cool better than a well ventilated 1U server.
