I'm leaning towards the 6600 but I would like to see a comparison of the 3 cards so i can get an idea of the performance difference between them

Just get the 6600 if it's in his budget. A 6200 is like a FX 5200 on steroids and an FX 5200 is just a Geforce 2 with Directx 9 technology with no strength to back it up and only has DX 9 support to justify the FX series name. It would be slower than a TI 4800SE. 6600 would destroy a 6200.

A 6200 might be on par, but I don't really know. Based on my experiance with the 6x00 series (6800GO and the GT in my sig) and my own 4x00 series (4600Ti and 4800SE), a 6600 would be well above the 4800SE in terms of performance. Nothing bleeding edge, but much better than what just died on him.

I would always go with the fastest card in my budget. Because you might need that power someday.

I've gotta second that as well. A good step of future proofing is never a bad idea. You never know how long you can get by on the lowest common demoninator, but if you buy decent you'll last a couple years. I have a feeling my 4800SE has another year left in it, but not much more. The 6800s have lasted a year already, and probably have another 2 or 3 in them.

I definitely would get the 6600. 9800 pros tend to die really quick, so get the 6600. Don't downgrade that when you can upgrade it.

my fathers budget is around AU$150 - AU$200, I can get a Leadtek 6600 256mb for AU$190 at my work, so I'll probably be going for that.
I'm just not sure if thats overkill for his system which is as follows

AMD Athlon 2400+
512mb DDR333
Epox 8RDA+
SB Audigy
2x 80GB seagate Barracuda 4

What the hell are you talking about? 9800 pros tend to die real quick? Do you have a massive statistic of 9800 pros dying within your household?

A 6600 is only going to be as fast as a 9700pro if you overclock it a bit. At stock, it's slightly slower. I own both cards. You'd probably be better off if you could find a 9800pro for under $100, otherwise, you're in 6600GT pricing territory, which is what the OP said he wanted to steer clear of.

9800's die really quick? What kind of FUD BS is that? I've got a PC from 2003 still running with a 9800 Pro.

Anyway, I too would go for the cheapest 6600 you can find.

Well, I've heard lots of stories about 9800 pros with failing heatsinks and frying. BTW, 9800 pro came out in march of 2003.

find a refurb 9800pro. Its faster than a 6600 vanilla, unless you OC it, SM3.0 probably isn't a major thing for a budget like that. Dunno about AUS -> US conversion rates and prices but they're normally around $100 here.

How much are 6600s going for these days? Last time I looked into them they were a bad buy because you could find 9800pros for cheaper, which IIRC beats them easily.

No idea on price but the ones with DDR2 could oc to a stock 6600GT (PCI-E only tho IIRC) on both core & mem...

that;s because there are 11ty billion 9800pros and they are older. The reason people dont complain about fx5950 fans is becasue there are maybe 3 in existance left that havent caught on fire. The reason less people complain about 6600gt and 6800 fans is because they are signifigantly lower. think about it, of course there are "lots" of 9800pro fan deaths, truly i think i've only read about 10 in allthe time i've been here.

This is where I get the horror stories about the 9800pro. BTW, there is not 11 billion 9800pros in the world. There are only like 20 million Geforce 6 and 7 series cards out there in the world. I get this because I read somewhere about a month ago that there had been 19 million Nvidia 6 and 7 series of cards installed around the world. That's like a year and a half from when they first came out in June of 2004. 2x that and you get like just 40 to 50 million radeon 9800pros in the world, not 11 billion. And there probably is more FX 5950s than just 3 still standing.
