Need a replacement chipset fan for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR mobo ..

Hey everyone .. So like 2 days ago, the stock chipset fan in DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard just died on me ... I am trying to revive it these days, but in case it doesn't work, I'm gonna need an aftermarket chipset cooler for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard ... by the way, I have my video card plugged in the bottom PCI-E slot, one which is not directly in front of the chipset fan cooler space ..

So, any chipset fan cooler suggestions for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard ? 🙂
 
thanx for the reply man, but how about that Evercool VC-RE chipset cooler ? I have had a lot of recommendations for that .. Plus, I'm not really looking to buy something very good ... just need something to get by, as I dont play games much on my PC anymore 😛

I think this was the normal recommendation on the now defunct DFI Street. They even made a video on how to replace the stock cooler using this unit. The spacing of the pins was a hair off but that didn't seem to affect it much.
 
VC-RE is good. I used that on a Gigabyte i865G C2D mobo, when the northbridge was overheating and causing errors installing XP. It worked out great.
 
Fricken worst heatsink + fan ever. I've seen more of those little things WHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE.

Zap's suggested heatsink is good enough. Low profile is always handy.
 
OK thanx for the help everyone 🙂 .. So I think I'm gonna buy this Evercool VC-RE .. I got two more questions about the thermal compound re-application procedure ...

1) The Evercool VC-RE fan kit already has some thermal compuound in it. Do you think that's good enough, or should I buy some Arctic Silver Ceramique just for this .. ? I mean, I know that Arctic Silver Ceramique may give slightly better results than the compound coming with the Evercool VC-RE, but would the difference be so much that I should specially buy Arctic Silver Ceramique for this ? Also, to be very honest, I really just want to get the new fan up and running .. I'm not really crazy about reaching the best possible performance ... So would the thermal compound coming with the Evercool VC-RE be good enough for me ?

2) Secondly, about the alcohol cleaning substance thats needed to clean up the chip's top before re-appling some thermal compound ... does this alcohol solution need to be something specific, or can it be just any other ordinary alcohol solution used for cleaning household stuff ?
 
The included paste will work fine. As for cleaning it, regular household rubbing alcohol works fine, preferably with the highest % of alcohol you have
 
OK thanx for that reply yh125d ... I saw this video regarding installing an Evercool VC-RE on a DFI motherboard, and the maker of the video (Angry_Games from the former DFI Street) said that it should be at least 91% pure ... is that some kind of a requirement .. ? (I'm kinda new at all this 😛)

I mean, I know you said that I should use the purest form of Alcohol I can get, but would it be harmful to your chipset in any way if the alcohol solution I get is not pure enough or something ?

Secondly, is there any name given to the alcohol of pure alcohol we are looking for here, so I can just ask for that in the shops ?
 
Check the pin-to-pin spacing. I bought an Enzo without thinking about that aspect. It's pretty, but it won't fit my motherboard. I suppose I could Dremel off the corner pins and drill my own holes...

Theres no requirement on paste really. Just about anything will do the job. Something like AS5 or OCZ freeze would probably work a few C better, but not enough to worry about

As for the alcohol, any will work also, just higher alcohol % means somewhat better cleaning and less residue.
 
Regular rubbing alcohol (~70%) can contain things you don't want, some have glycerine or wintergreen oil in them all you want is alcohol and distilled water in your alcohol (if there's anything else in there, it's supposed to say so on the label) - very hard to get all the water out as alcohol is hygroscopic - that's why you almost never find 100% (aka absolute or 200 proof) alcohol except in labs. 90% or better isopropyl or ethanol is good for our purposes. Most drug stores/departments carry it, e.g. both my local WalMart and Target have it for around a buck a pint.

Yes, Zalman still makes passive sinks for a lot of applications, but know what you're doing if you choose one. They need clearance and should have moving air from the case or CPU fan(s) blowing over it for best results.

Mine died and I never got around to replacing it.....b/c I never had any issues with it overheating or causing any stability problems (even on an OC'd rig). I used it for many more months without issue or fail until I sold it, and it's still working great to this day.
 
Same thing as skillyho... I never replaced it. It was in my HTPC too which didn't have a lot of airflow, but I never had any temp issues with it, and it is still working after 2 years of having the dead fan... The heatsink itself seems to be enough to dissipate the heat produced from that chip.

P.S. It has since moved on and downward in my life-cycle of computer components and is now in my parent's computer, which has better airflow (its circa 2002 Cooler Master ACTS case, with 80mm fans). Still working fine.
 
Hello! Same problem here, same motherboard. Someone said "I saw this video regarding installing an Evercool VC-RE on a DFI motherboard, and the maker of the video..." , but where? I google-d for hours and no result...
So firstly, is there a special secret to know about how to replace the chip original fan with that Evercool because it will not work properly?
And secondly, the model VC-RE is no longer available, but there is a VC-RF which doesnt seem very different. Will it work well?

going to lock this thread due to it being a 5 yr necro.
Replacing the chipset cooler is one of the easiest things to do, push the pushpins out from the backside of the board, and replace the sink.

90% of any universal chipset coolers should work if u require a replacement.
Personally get anything which has an active fan and is universal.
