Okay, I am moving. I want to get one of those flat bed things to put my car on and then haul it to a very far away place (FL to No. VA). I know that I can get the flat bed thing at a U-Haul or Ryder place. But where should I get the truck? I just need something strong enough to be able to haul the car and dolly. The car is a Celica, it's probably only about 2 tons. Should I get the truck from a regular car rental place, or should I get it from a U-Haul type place?

Thanks Anandtech, your help has been grrrrrrrreeeat to me.

So you need no truck for moving furniture, etc.? The two times I used one of the full carhauling trailers, it was attached to the back of the 14ft truck I used for moving. Uhaul and Ryder rent pickups as well, you just have to make sure they are adequate for towing the trailer.

DO NOT RENT FROM UHAUL! They suck from top to bottom.
Ryder is the best bet. They will set you up with Truck and Tow Dolly.

For a minute, I read this as "Need a rental FVCK!"

Check your local ghetto street corner. Plenty of crack hos available to accommodate you. ;)

You could check enterprise rental for a full size pickup truck. You should be able to do a a couple day rental for around $50 a day. A full size chevy pickup will be able to tow that car and trailer. It won't get up to speed very quick, but it will certainly pull it. It'll be more comfortable, and probably cheaper than renting a big moving truck from Ryder or Budget.

BTW - avoid uhaul like the plague. Their fleet vehicles are HORRID.

do your self a big favor and rent a Trailer,Not a 2 wheel "dolly" type thing.
I rented one,and what a nightmare,there is not a safe way to back the thing up,in case you mess up,like at a fuel stop,rest area,McDonalds etc.etc...

Ryder is very good,Penske;same
U-haul is sad, customer service wise, and they have a lot of worn out equipment.

Do a search for uhaul here.. and read it!

I was not planning to two-wheel-tow my car. I want to flat bed it on a trailer, because dragging the back tires will give me super uneven tire-wear. I'm going a pretty far way. I think my best bet is to rent a big Chevy truck strong enough to haul it and then put my car on the back of it. Any suggestions for affordable passenger truck rentals?

Whaddya mean? I moving, and I dont want to put mileage on my car!! This thing has to last me a long time you know! All my furniture and things will already be hauled up there by someone who is making a trip there a few days before me!

I rented a full size silverado from Enterprise for right around $54. That was for a day, and allowed me 200. I'm sure you can try and do 4 days or something and get 800 miles (or more) for milage allowance. How far of a drive is that?

I'm not exactly sure how far it is. I'm going from Gainesville, FL to Fairfax, VA. My guess is maybe about 1200-1500 miles?

In a word... YES!

Why?! What else should I do? Strap the Celica to my back and walk there... or load it as airplane cargo? Come on, I don't have very many choices here. And I don't want to drive it, because the tires are balding and I don't think it's going to last much longer.... plus I don't want to over heat my car and kill the mileage! You must not LOVE your car.

Edit: People that love their cars, LOVE to drive them! Spend the rental money on some rubber and drive!

Make sure that unlimited miles really means unlimited miles. some of the major car renters have switched to a certain miles per day allowance nowadays.

buy 4 tires, used locally and drive it,it will be cheaper.

or is the car in need of repair, besides the tires, which you can buy at Pep boys for like $150 for 4,
which is still less than a trailor, truck and fuel

yahoo maps says,

Gainesville, FL Save Address
Arriving at: Fairfax, VA Save Address Get Reverse Directions

Distance: 771.3 miles Approximate Travel Time: 11 hours 51 mins

Okay, so I'm crazy because I don't want mileage on my car. Send me to the looney bin. I agree it's not that nice of a car and stuff, but I know I have to keep this car for a REALLY long time. I don't know why everyone is bullying me about it. It's not like I need to borrow you all's trucks and stuff. Sheesh yourselves.

If it were me, I'd drive it because I'm friggen CHEAP! Those trucks aren't cheap at all. I'd rather invest that dough in the car. Those repairs will last for years, but the money spent for rental will be gone that day. I hate that!

You ought to call and get some rental prices before you make up your mind. A one-way rental can be pretty expensive.

if you plan on keeping the car for a realllly long time as you say then what's another 700-800 miles?
Change the oil, fix the radiator so it doesn't over heat, and drive.

Highway miles are easy on the car.... Just get on highways and go 65ish on cruise control and you'll be there in no time with practically no additional wear on your car.

When I go on trips I make it a point to take my car just because it's a blast to drive and I love it. I know i'm taking care of it and it's going to keep on truckin.

Your car doesn't way near two tons. How come you can't drive it? Or tow it?
