Need a recommendation

Hello all,

I recently picked up some new hardware and installed it. It's running a bit hot, and I need some advice on how to get it down in temp. Here's the rig:

ASUS Rampage Formula
4 GB ram (forgot the brand DD2)
BFG 8800 GT
Intel E8500 Wolfdale 3.16 GHZ (has stock heatsink on it)

I have an older Coolermaster wavemaster case.

I can't recall the PSU off the top of my head, but it is 550 watts and pretty decent.

I've heard ridiculous things like just changing out the HS/F and the thermal paste will lower the temp considerably. What do you think?

What are your temps? May go a long way to figuring out your best course of action if there is even a problem with the temps.

The Wave Master is a pretty old-school case re. cooling. I've put a 120mm exhaust fan on an adapter at the rear, removed the 2x80mm fan bracket on the front and put a 100mm Scythe Kaze Jyu (medium speed) in the front (just used double sided foam tape and friction fit - cover the glue on the outside with the paper strips you remove from it reversed). Here's a pic of the exhaust rig:

Hello,

I have the CM Praetorian which is the same chassis as the Wavemaster. My temps are ok and I have the following in my rig, which I assume (rightly or wrongly) would generate more heat than the components in your rig.

The Praetorian has the additional 1x 80mm dia fan mounted in the top of the case.

CPU: QX9770 at stock speed
HSF: TT BigTyp 120VX
GPU: HD4870 X2 at stock speed (exhausts out the rear)
MB: GA-X48T-DQ6 with 40mm dia fan tie-wrapped to NB
RAM: 4GB OCZ Platinum Edition
HDD: 200GB WD
PSU: Antec TPQ 1000W
Soundcard: X-Fi Extreme PCI-E
Hauppauge Primo FM TV card
BT Voyager 1040 wireless network card

My temperatures at idle are (from HW Monitor and CoreTemp):
CPU core temps: 26C (~39C under 100% load)
GPU core temps: 49C with fan at 50%
Inside case temp: 29C
HDD temp: 26C

Do you have good cable management inside your case, so that cross-flow ventilation (i.e. from intake to exhaust fans) is not obstructed?

Is there adequate clearance around the outside of the case (i.e. case fans not being obstructed)?

What are the ambient temps oustide the case (e.g. do you live in the Caribbean)?

Is the HSF mounted correctly on the CPU?

Do you have the additional 80mm dia fan in the top of the case?

Do all the fans work correctly in your case?

Are you using a fan controller?

That's all I could think of at the moment.

Well, I booted it twice. It runs so hot that the emergency shutdown kicks in. So I'm not sure exactly, but probably ridiculous 😛

I definitely need more and bigger fans, and probably a new heatsink. This Lian Li Lancool PC-K7B looks decent and has a nice low price tag. Any opinions?

I'll bet your current heatsink needs to be remounted. did you use the stock, pre-applied stuff? did all the pins snap in? Release and reset the pushpins, kitty corner, 2 at a time without lifting the heatsink.

It could be that, it's been giving me a hard time.

yea the stock heatsink should still allow you to boot it. i had this issue the first time i installed a pushpin based LGA775 cooler. turned out i didnt know wtf i was doing and i was actually doing it all wrong 😀
