Hey, I'm looking to read some good fantasy books. By fantasy I mean knights, wizards, mythical, creatures and ACTION. So basically Lord of the Rings type. So let the titles fly...

Lord of the Rings was an ACTION type fantasy book for you?

Anyways, if you want action that's as real and gritty as you can get, but also political intrigue, A Song of Ice and Fire is it.

Ehh, I haven't read LOTR, that's the kind of theme I would like, I guess I couldn't say how actiony it is as I've only seen the movie(but please don't recommend the book)

I was looking into Song of Ice and Fire, but I read a review of it saying it's not really about action, but more about character development.

A Spell for Chameleon - Piers Anthony
Hopefully you realize there is a full series of like 20 of these books by Piers that cronical the tales of Xanth and all the people within it. Gets a little racy at points and the puns are hillarious. a great collection!

 I'm patiently waiting for book 5.

It's hard for me to get into book 4. I think it's starting to go down hill...

A few of us on ATOT swear by Steven Erikson's "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series.

it's the best damn fantasy series out there. no question about it.

book 1 is called Gardens of the Moon. It's really deep, convoluted, and involved... but once you've gotten a handle on things... other fantasy books will NEVER read the same

I don't read a lot of those type of books but the last ones I did read were Eragon and Eldest by Paolini and The Dragon Riders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey. Paolini's has everything you're looking for while McCaffrey's 20 or so book series is more Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

That was the first real fantasy book I'd ever read.

Excellent suggestion, those books are the best fantasy I've ever read. A little bit low on magic, but very high on action, intrigue and numerous plot developments.

agreed. Ice & Fire is the some of most nitty gritty and dark fantasy I've ever read. Like tenshodo said, there isn't much magic and such, but the story and the characters are awesome.

But if you want crazy magic and explosions and stuff, definitely check out the Erikson books like I said in my post above!

Another vote for George RR Martin's "A song of Ice and Fire" series.
My favorite.

2nd the recommendation for Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen, as well as Martin's Song of Ice and Fire.

Also The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch, Mistborn and Elantris by Brandon Sanderson, Scott Bakker's Prince of Nothing trilogy, Keeping it Real by Justina Robson, and finally Infoquake by David Edelman. All reads I've found highly entertaining.

If you're willing to include horror, "Fevre Dream" by George R.R. Martin is good as well, as well as his short story collections. Tuf Voyaging, while sci-fi, is very good. Dying of the Light sucked. The Armageddon Rag was good, but it was essentially two different books, since it changed COMPLETELY in writing style at the half-way mark. I'm iffy on recommending that one. There's also a couple of "A Song of Ice and Fire" short stories, set 100 years before the current series. Legends I and Legends II each have one of his stories. "The Hedge Knight" and "The Sworn Sword." Legends is weird, because when they went to paperback, they split the book into three different books, and one of them was called Legends II. But then a new collection of different short stories came out, ALSO called Legends II. Just make sure he's listed as one of the writers, in whatever you get from the library or buy.

Note: The Hedge Knight was also adapted into a comic book, available in trade paperback. They've been considering making an on-going series based on the current books, plus there's the HBO series coming up.

If you like good writing, I would recommend Song of Ice and Fire like the others. One of my favorite fantasy series right now. If you don't care about the writing, and are willing to overlook it for the sake of a pretty good story, I would recommend The Wheel of Time. At least until book 9 or so. Maybe you should even stop before that. After a certain point I completely stopped caring about most if not all of the characters in the books, and just read them to get to the end.

Song of Ice and Fire on the other hand only has a fairly limited number of characters, and the author has no problem with removing them.

11 was a worthwhile read, and I should hope 12 is the same.

WoT ran out of gas at book 5, everything else pretty much sucked after that since nothing happened, except the font's got bigger to increase the page count and look like there was more material than there was,

Yeah, but I like the first 2 the most, and the ones that follow I find less interesting.

On the other hand, another series of his is pretty awesome, the Incarnations of Immortality
check out the first book at least
On a Pale Horse - Piers Anthony
