Need a recommendation guys.

Need Mobo, RAM, PSU and vid card for $650.00. Building a new rig around X2 3800. SLI or crossfire is not a priority ( or needed). Already have an Enermax 430W but dont know if I'll need new sonnectore for PCI-X card. Will be using PATA HDs.

cpu: AMD Athlon64 X2 3800+ - 300 bucks right there...
mobo: either an epox or an asrock...im not very good at picking mobos. the one you should be looking for should be with an nforce4 (regular, ultra, sli) or the uli chipset and cost less than 100 bucks.
ram: corsair 2x512MB (1GB) PC3200/ddr-400 ram in dual-channel - 77 bucks.

$477 used. this will give you enough money to get a 175ish dollar video card.

video: Nvidia Geforce 7600GT - 165 bucks after 10 dollar rebate, so its 175. perfect for you.

btw, i hope that helped somewhat. sli might be an option if you had another 200 bucks to spare...sli mobo and another video card thats all you need.

You can get adapter to video card if you need one.

Looks like you can check the other gaming builds now going on AT or makeup something on your own and then let the other ATers comment, your choice.

EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra. Rock stable at stock settings and good overclocker. Can't really answer the rest because we don't know if you will be ocing.

You may want to consider a Pentium 940, same performance as a X2 3800+, and it's $40 cheaper. DDR2 memory is cheaper right now as well. I'd get a 945P motherboard. For video card (for gaming), a 7600 GT will do.

Why? The 940 is everything the X2 3800 is, and it's cheaper. I think you're a fool to go with an x2 3800+.

Video Card: AGP or PCI-E here? AGP = 6800GS 256MB PCI-E = 7600GT 256MB

I'm not going to advise you on your already selected componants though....

That all will cost more than $650. The X2 3800 is ~300 alone.

Have decided on X2 3800, need rest of the parts.

I found an X2 4400+ here on AnandTech for a super price, delivered. You might inquire for an 3800+. Maybe there's one out there for around $200 or less?

Blodhi, these just dropped in price, considerably, in the past week. That 940 was at minimum $125 more 10 days ago.

OP, use this link to see if the 940 is better than x2 3800. for gaming, in general, AMD is better but i would look at this benchmarking link and other sites with more of the "current" games on it

btw, u don't want PCI-X, you want PCI-E. there's a big difference

i think you should make a list of parts you think are good and then have ATers critique it. they shouldn't do all the work...it is your build after all
