Going cobia fishing on sunday in my kayak and need a small bat to beat the fish into submission so I can store it in case it ends up being larger than the 37" requirement. What's a good place to find a cheap bat that's on the smaller end of the spectrum (i.e. teeball or smaller)?

I normally use a 2 ft long metal pipe that you can find at the hardware store. If need be, put plastic caps at the ends. When I land a halibut on my kayak, it flops around uncontrollably. A few smacks to the brain fixes the problem.

so if you land a bull shark are you going to put your cock in its mouth?

Note: you only need to stun the shark and throw it back in so it lives. If you want to keep the fist you stun it so you can kill it.

First off...how is Amdhunters post before the OP?

Secondly, i'm not using my penis to beat the thing into submission...they've got spines on their backs.

Thirdly, the ones at tackle shops are pretty expensive...figured an aluminum tball bat would be better.

Fourth, i have a tape measure on the side of my yak so when I get it to the boat i'll base my initial measurement on that...if it's bigger then i'll beat the crap out of it while it's still in the water. That thing is not coming into my boat while it's still alive. Cobia can do some amazing damage when the come out of the water, especially a 30-50lber.

Pipe doesn't sound like a bad idea, just gotta figure out a way to give it a little more weight in order to get some extra oomf out of it.

lead weights, end caps. cap one end of the pipe, stand it up against a wall, fill the pipe half way with the lead weights, heat it up for a bit. once they settle and get cool, youll have a lopsided club. doesnt take much to soften the lead enough to meld together. this works for old deadblow hammers as well, without the heat.

A hollowed out chair leg filled with lead does a wonderful job

My wife's grandma had one made for her many many years ago, has a leather strap on the end so you won't lose it if you drop it.

You have a really small bat in your pants? I'm sorry??? Thanks for sharing.

Sorry? It's great! It gets to hit balls all day!

lulz...

OP get a pipe and some plastic caps for the ends. Put one cap on and duct tape it real good. Fill the pipe with sand and then put the other cap on and tape it real good. Should work okay.

Good luck on the cobia hunt!!

Just make sure he's of legal size before you knock him out. A buddy of mine came really, really close with wahoo down in the keys. When they pulled him over and checked his cooler they spent about a half hour measuring and debating.

Good thing he didn't use his penis as suggested in this thread, that would have been awkward.

I've heard some stories about this kinda thing...Which is why I'll just do a quick measurement...if it's obviously more than 37" ill just starting beating the crap out of it while it's in the water. If it's less then I'll fight it to a standstill and then remove the hook while the fish is in the water. A "green" cobia is not something I want to fuck with so whenever it gets close to the boat i'll just poke it with my net until it gets too tired.
