Need a range extender. But I am not sure how they work

Ok I have a 4 port/wireless cable modem. It has a wierd name like aethos or something like that. Am I able to use any wireless range extender for this device or does it have to be a specific one. See I want the best bang for the buck. I need to get 2 of them. one for the backyard and one for the upstairs.

Also will this increase the speed for the areas that have mid/poor coverage.
