Need a quiet case *like* the Sonata but *without* a P/Supply ?

Hi

Am looking for a case as quiet as the Antec Sonata, but which I can buy *without* a powersupply.

Is there another brand or model case [ by any manufacturer ] that is as quiet as the Sonata but which comes *without* a powersupply ?

What makes the Sonata so quiet? A case is only as silent as the components it houses. If your case is loaded with Okasa paxmats, that would make it quieter, but the heat dispersion would be horrible.

Get a nice Lian-Li case. As far as I know, none come with a psu.

Agreed. A Sonata will be as quiet as the components you put into it. That said, the case fan in the Sonata is "relatively" quiet but if you're not using a power supply that has an option to undervolt it then be prepared for an absurd amount of noise.

Wow it's useless getting it with no PSU. It's only 5 bucks cheaper. You could get the regular one and then pawn the PSU on Ebay and make out better.

Directron take off ** $5 ** if you order the Sonata without the 380w unit !?!?!?

Might start to check out some Lian-Li options.

Evercase 42x2 series - you can get HD vibe dampers direct from Evercase if they don't come with the case and add-on HD cages, etc. One of the quietest stock cases you can get per SPCR. And you can get the Compucase (see coolcases.com) w/o psu. It's the same as the SLK3700AMB except for the front bezel.

One of the reasons the Sonata is quiet is because of the power supply; it has a thermal sensor and circuitry that adjust fan rpm depending on temperature. This works for both the PS fan and any fans connected to the "fan only" connectors. Work great by the way.

Nessism,
. Almost all decent PSUs have temperature controlled fans - even the little 250W Sparkle I have here has that. 120mm fans that can turn slower for the same CFM help a lot too.

no no no.. this one is $25 after rebate at fry's right now.

That Fry's case is a great value no doubt! It's not a great case though:brokenheart: The metal is quite thin on the side panels which make sliding them on a challange at times. Please don't take me wrong on this, I've built a couple of different system with that case, or the older version - KS382 version, and liked it fine. Just don't confuse the SLK family with a premium case like the older Chen Ming built Antec SX 600/800/1000 family. Now there a case!

you've never seen one? its got built in hd dampener mounts, its very solid and heavy, its intakes have no direct path to the outside for sound...rubber fan mounts. given a set of compenents it will be quieter then most cases.

The thermaltake Tsunami is very similar to the SOnata. You would need to buy a fanbus controller to make it quiet, though. I think the Thermaltake sViking is also available without a PSU. Personally, I'd get the Sonata and sell the PSU. You could easily sell it on the Sale/Trade forum here. You might also look into the Antec Lanboy. It isn't as quiet as the Sonata but it has a lot of other features and is available without a PSU for about $80.

not really. aluminum = sound problem.. esp when thin. drive bays have no rubber mounts, fans no rubber mounts...

nayways, what system are you building? does it even need more then 380 truepower? truepower is good stuff.

Exactly, people overemphasize PSU wattage. Once again, I'll point to my sig so you can oogle what I've got running on my Sonata's True380.

$51 shipped seems like a reasonable deal to me. I know it's a matter of personel preference but I'm not a huge fan of drive doors - at least thin, flexable drive doors like on the Sonata, and presumably, this case. None the less, this seems like a reasonable deal for those of us that have a PS already.

As a side note, Compucase LX-6A19 from Directron for $36 + shipping is the same case internally as this Antec. A good choice for those that don't like doors over their drives😛
