Need a quick video card recommendation

It's for my HTPC. I am replacing a GeForce 7500 or something like that mainly because it's got dVI and my new TV wants HDMI.

Sure I can get a DVI-HDMI cable but that stuff's not cheap. I'd rather put that money towards a whole new card.

So besides it obviously needing to have HDMI I just want something that can handle HD video - something geared towards media/video. I'd prefer something cooler/lighter duty than something beefy that produces more heat than my furnace for horsepower which is overkill for an HTPC

Can you suggest something for me? Im totally out of the loop with video cards. I thought nvidia 9000 series was the latest and then I see these new ones with lower numbers like 200's 400's and 500's I thought they were like some economy series or something. *shrug*

If you're still happy with your 7500, you can pick up a DVI-HDMI cable for fairly cheap. I'm not sure where you were looking, but check monoprice or amazon. Depending on length, $3 plus shipping isn't bad...

Whaaaat!? how's it possible those are so cheap?? I'm trying to find them in a local micro center (hoping to set this up tonight - tv just arrived today) and the place has them in the $30's up!

they do have a evga gts 450 for $129

wow I can get 100ft hdmi cable from that place for $80. then I can wire my tv from across the damn house from the htpc! haha

It's always great when someone visits monoprice for the first time. 🙂

Local retailers have always gouged prices on all sorts of cables, because most people will pay that much. Remember when HDMI cables used to be $60+? They are still up there in retail stores, but monoprice always had them cheap.
